Orr eyes breakout season at Iowa State

Earned academic All-American honors

Quinton Orr enters his third season at Iowa State University excited for the future.

Orr, a 2021 Humboldt High School graduate, is optimistic for a breakout season running fall cross country and competing on the Cyclone indoor and outdoor track teams. Last spring Orr became a strong competitor running the steeplechase for the Cyclones.

Academically, he’s changed his major and has had success in the classroom, evidenced by the fact he received academic All-Big 12 Conference honors in all three sports and also earned academic All-American honors for outdoor track.

“You have to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 and compete in over 50 percent of your team’s races. That is a super-cool award. Myself and another teammate received the All-American honors and we are the first two people to attain that honor under our head coach during his career,” Orr said.

Orr will graduate next spring with his bachelor’s degree in biology. His original plan entering Iowa State was to go into veterinary school. He has changed his course.

“My plan now is to get a master’s degree in some sort of biology and get a doctorate degree. Do some research or even become a professor. I feel like it’s more up my alley in what I want to do in regards for a career,” Orr said. “This summer I’m doing research and have really enjoyed it and found it to be fascinating, more so than veterinary medicine.”
