South water tower to get facelift

The Humboldt City Council on Monday approved work on the city’s south water tower and the work could come soon.
Bids were received from two vendors, K&W Coatings and Central Tank Coatings for interior and exterior painting, possible concrete foundation repair and minor repairs on tank plugs and couplings.
Central Tank Coatings of Elgin provided a quote of $103,000. K&W Coatings of Elkader provided a quote of $86,130.
The contractor noticed some speckled corrosion on the exterior of the tank. Surface preparation and an application of an acrylic coating system will seal the surface from oxygen, halting corrosion. The Council unanimously approved the low bid.
"We are shooting for the week of Aug. 21,” Humboldt City Administrator Cole Bockelmann said. “It will probably be offline for a week-and-a-half or maybe a little more."
