A gutsy performance by the Humboldt football team Friday night (Sept. 1) in Huxley powered the Wildcats to a 14-13 victory over the Ballard Huxley Bombers in a non-district game.

Humboldt, 2-0 on the young season, scored on a touchdown pass from Coen Matson to Corey Dettmann midway through the second quarter. Humboldt took a 14-7 lead 32 seconds later when Broedy Collins-Hendricks recovered a fumble in the end after Wildcat defender Cael Donahe sacked the Ballard quarterback deep in Bomber territory. Nolan Gustafson kicked the point-after after both scores to give Humboldt a 14-7 halftime lead.

Ballard had taken a 7-0 lead when Jude Gibson returned the opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown.

Humboldt's defense was led by senior Carson Sleiter, who intercepted two Bomber passes.

Humboldt will return home on Sept. 8 to host Class 2A power Van Meter at 7 p.m. on Mason Maach Field.
