Next Generation Farmer classes at ISU Extension

Dan Johnson, who farms in the Bode and Livermore area, was photographed harvesting a field of corn last week on a bright, sun-splashed day. Farmers are approaching the end of the harvest after a dry growing season, which has provided a wide range of yield results. Independent photo by Phil Monson. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Census of Agriculture, the average age of the Iowa farmer is 57.1 years. There are four times as many Iowa farmers over the age of 65 as there are under the age of 35.
That means there is going to have to be a lot of farm succession and farm future planning going on during the next decade.
Toward that end, Dorothy Goodell with Humboldt County Iowa State Extension and Outreach, has worked with industry partners in developing a series of Next Generation Farmer meetings. There will be six meetings on Tuesday evenings, starting Nov. 7, and continuing through March 12.
The Registration is $55 for all six sessions (or as many as the person wants to attend,) and includes lunch and incentives for attending each of the programs. All programs will be held in the Extension meeting room at Humboldt County Extension, 727 Sumner Ave. Payment can be made in cash or check the night of the meeting.
