In a meeting that was at times emotional on Monday night, Aug. 5, the Humboldt City Council bid farewell to longtime city clerk Gloria Christensen, who is retiring this month after over 30 years of service to the city.

Mayor Dan Scholl read a proclamation recognizing Christensen. He also presented a glass plaque with a message from the city of Humboldt, praising Christensen “For 30 years of dedicated service and her outstanding commitment to the community.”

“Wow. I just want to thank everybody that’s here. All you guys. When I go to other meetings, I tell people how lucky we are to have such a great council, mayor and staff here. I just appreciate everything that everyone has done. I know I will miss everybody terribly. Thank you so much,” a tearful Christensen said, standing near the front on the council chambers with everyone in attendance giving her a long round of applause.

“I want to thank you for all your hard work. You got us through some really serious issues and I really appreciate it,” councilman John Sleiter said. Other councilmen joined in praising Christensen.

The council then approved the hiring of Amy Zeman as city clerk/finance director, at a rate of $37.25 per hour. The council approved a pay rate adjustment for Christensen to $37.25 per hour. Christensen will stay on and help Zeman with her transition over the next two weeks as well as provide help for the city hall staff. Zeman, a rural Livermore native, is coming back to her home area. She has spent the last eight years as city clerk for the town of Ellsworth. She has an extensive background in finance work for business and the banking industry.
