Humboldt knocks off No. 1 Algona, 21-20

In a battle for Class 3A District 2 supremacy, the Humboldt Wildcat football team knocked off previously unbeaten Algona, 21-20 before a standing room only crowd at Mason Maach Field in Humboldt on Friday night, Oct. 11.

The Wildcats moved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in 3A-2. Algona slipped to 6-1, 2-1.

Algona scored on a 12-yard pass play with 55 seconds left in the game, but were unsuccessful on their 2-point conversion attempt on a pass that was intercepted in the end zone by Humboldt's Zane McIntire.

Algona burned Humboldt on the very first play of the game when senior quarterback and Iowa State University recruit Alex Manske hooked up with Evan Allie for an 80-yard touchdown pass. Humboldt came back on the very next series and tied the game at 7-7 when quarterback Coen Matson scored on a 1-yard run.

Humboldt made it 14-7 late in the first half when Matson scored on a one-yard run. Algona needed just four plays to cover 79 yards before scoring on a 27-yard pass from Manske to Tate Slagle with nine seconds left before halftime, making it 14-14.

Cash McIntire put Humboldt ahead for good on a 25-yard touchdown run with 9:45 left in the fourth quarter. Algona put together a 73-yard drive that culminated on a 12-yard pass from Nathan Manske to Slagle, who then lateraled the ball to Allie for the score. The Bulldogs were unsuccessful on their conversion pass play.

Humboldt will visit Clear Lake on Oct. 18 in 3A-2 action. Humboldt is now 3-0 and in first-place in district play. Algona, Clear Lake and Webster City are all at 2-1 while Charles City and Hampton-Dumont-CAL are 0-3.
