2nd half comeback powers Humboldt in 28-14 victory over Webster City

HOST CLEAR LAKE IN PLAYOFF OPENER

Coen Matson threw four touchdown passes, including three to Chase Flaherty, all in the second half to power the Humboldt football team to a 28-14 victory over the Webster City Lynx on Friday night (Oct. 25) in Humboldt on Mason Maach Field.

Trailing 14-0 at halftime, the Wildcats scored on the opening drive of the second half and never let up as they finished their regular season at 8-1 overall, 5-0 and outright champions of Class 3A District 2.

The Wildcats, who hold the top spot in the RPI index, will host Clear Lake in the first round of the state playoffs, which begin on Nov. 1. The winner will face Solon or Benton in the second round on Nov. 8.

Matson and Flaherty teamed up on scoring passes covering four, 20 and 41 yards. Matson also threw an 18-yard TD pass to Valley Davis. Karson Rubel kicked all four extra points for Humboldt. Humboldt linebacker Trey Al-Hameed recovered a Webster City fumble and Flaherty intercepted WC pass with 4:58 to play to help preserve the win for the Wildcats.

Webster City finishes 3-6 overall, 2-3 in district play.
