David Jones hired as new Sheriff Deputy
By APRIL KELLEY
There’s a new (deputy) sheriff in town. Sheriff Dean Kruger requested the Supervisors approve the hiring of David Jones who is currently a Humboldt Police Officer. Jones will fill the position left vacant after Deputy Michael Vinsand transitioned into the School Resource Deputy position.
The Supervisors voted four to one to approve the hire at the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors meeting on Monday, Oct. 28. The lone dissenter, Supervisor Sandy Loney, told Sheriff Kruger and Officer Jones that she does not have any doubts about Jones being a good deputy.
She stated her concerns are that by hiring Jones as a deputy, it leaves the Humboldt Police Department down yet another officer at a time when the department is already understaffed.
“Nothing against Dave or anything but I have voiced my concern about this before. The Humboldt City Department is so low on police officers, I just don’t feel it is appropriate to take another one,” Loney said.
“I’m just concerned about the Humboldt police. I’m a Humboldt citizen too and I’m just sure that’s the right way to go,” Loney concluded.
“I would rather that we take him than he goes to Fort Dodge or Des Moines or somewhere else,” Supervisor Bruce Reimers said.
Kruger told the Supervisors that he felt that with Jones’s 17 years of experience in law enforcement and his knowledge of Humboldt County that he was the best candidate for the job.
