Initial donations to auditorium renovation project
Initial donations have come in for the auditorium improvement fundraiser at Humboldt High School.
Last week the district accepted a donation totaling $1,200 from Ted and Carol Beach and $1,200 from Jim and Cheryl Sayers, all of Humboldt.
District patrons are encouraged to donate $600 per seat for each of the 600 seats inside R. Wesley Carlson Auditorium, which needs improvements. The facility was built in 1980-81.
A dedication kiosk in the lobby will include the photo of the person who the seat is dedicated to and it can also include an inspiring message. A nameplate honoring the person will appear on a new seat.
The Humboldt Community School District is hoping to raise nearly $1 million by Dec. 15.
When they learned about the fundraising project, Ted and Carol Beach knew it was something they wanted to donate toward right away. Ted’s first wife, the late Sue Beach, and Carol’s first husband, the late Dean Coleman, will be honored with a nameplate.
“We read about the fundraiser in the Humboldt Independent Newspaper and so we went into the school the next day to make our donation,” Carol Beach said. “We both felt this is something nice that we can do in memory of Sue and Dean.”
“Sue was in education. She worked at Twin Rivers High School and also for the AEA,” said Ted, himself a teacher and coach at Twin Rivers High School. “We both thought right away it would be good to have Sue and Dean’s names on a seat in the auditorium.”
“Ted and Carol walked into our office the next day and asked to donate. They said this project will impact a lot of people for many, many years,” Humboldt School Superintendent Jim Murray said.
Another area couple who donated right away, Jim and Cheryl Sayers, said in their letter submitted to the school, “this venue has hosted countless concerts, award ceremonies, dramatic presentations and community events since it was built.”
“Our kids, along with many other families’ kids, have performed on stage there and enjoyed the benefits such a beautiful and functional auditorium can offer. It’s time to update, upgrade and improve the facility for the future.”
