The Mustangs turned the ball over with under 2:00 to play in the game as the Wildats' Syler Brown recovered to allow the Wildcats to run out the clock and improve their record to 11-1 and advance into the state finals.

Humboldt's only other appearance in the state finals was back on Nov. 18, 2006, when the Wildcats defeated Clear Lake 27-9 to win the 3A state championship under former head coach Greg Thomas.
