Clarken wins 138-pound title, HHS boys 5th at Osage

Humboldt senior Tyce Clarken won the 138-pound class in leading the Humboldt boys' wrestling team to a fifth-place finish in the Osage tournament on Saturday, Jan. 4.

Clarken, now 13-2 on the season, went 5-0 on the day to claim top honors at 138 pounds. Cyler Cirks was runner-up at 132 pounds. Placing fourth was Brady Beers (13-5) at 144 and Broedy Hendricks at 190. Hendricks, 13-2 on the year and ranked first at 175 pounds, lost 6-5 in the semifinals to Austin Scranton of Anamosa, the Class 2A 175-pound state champion last year. After Hendricks pinned Brody Shipley of Algona, he was pinned by Corbin Hill of Denver in the match for third.

Humboldt senior Owen Mayall was fifth at 126 while Landon Halverson was sixth at 175. Trey Al-Hameed was seventh at 165 pounds. Placing eighth was Sam Knight at 113, Ayden Fiengo at 285 and Jaxson Kirchhoff at 150. Also competing but not placing for Humboldt was Dylan Frideres at 106, Henry Kramer at 120, Braden Downs at 157 and Cael Donahe at 215.

Algona was the team champion with 199 points. Osage was second with 185 and Denver third at 175. Benton Community took fourth with 168 points and Humboldt followed with 148.5. West Marshall was sixth with 137. A total of 17 schools competed in the tournament.

Humboldt returns to action at home on Thursday, Jan. 9, against Clarion-Goldfield-Dows and Clear Lake in NCC dual action.
