Corey Matson, who has been on the sidelines for Humboldt High School football games for the past 23 years, is stepping back from his role as a paid assistant coach.

At last month’s Humboldt School Board meeting, the board approved Matson’s resignation as a paid assistant. He will continue to serve as a volunteer assistant coach.

Matson has been the defensive coordinator for the Wildcats for the past several seasons, working with defensive assistants Derrik Clark, Tyler Nielsen and Cole Goodenow. Matson has been an assistant coach for the last 23 seasons.

His youngest son, Coen, graduates this spring. He was the starting quarterback for the Wildcats the past two seasons, helping lead Humboldt to the Class 3A state championship in November. His oldest son, Caden, a 2022 Humboldt High School graduate, is attending Iowa State University in Ames. He recently completed his third season on the Cyclone football team where he is a special teams starter.
