Humboldt’s hopes of qualifying for the boys Class 2A state dual wrestling tournament fell short Tuesday night (Feb 4) as the Wildcats were edged by Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, 38-37 in a regional dual in the Humboldt gym. The Cowboys, who had defeated Hampton-Dumont-CAL 50-17 in the first round, will now advance to the state duals in Coralville on Saturday, Feb. 8.

Humboldt built up a 31-9 lead after the first eight matches before CGD won four straight matches by pin to take a 33-31 lead. In the 126 pound match, Adrian Phetxoumphone of CGD won by technical fall (17-2) over Jonny Hayden in 2:09 to clinch the victory for CGD at 38-31. Humboldt's Cyler Cirks won by forfeit at 132 in the final bout to make it 38-37 Cowboys over the Wildcats.

Humboldt slips to 19-6 overall. The Wildcats are looking to enter the Eagle Grove tournament on Saturday, Feb. 8, in hopes of securing a final tune-up before hosting a Class 2A district meet on Feb. 15 in Humboldt.
