Humboldt High senior Brooklyn Robinson capped an impressive two-day state championship run by winning the 235-pound title on Friday night in the Class 1A girls' state wrestling tournament at Coralville inside Xtream Arena on Feb. 7.
Robinson, 43-6, pinned Kaylee De Jong of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in 29 seconds in the championship match. Earlier in the day in the semifinals, Robinson pinned Jocelyn Buffum of Logan-Magnolia/Woodbine in 6:34 to earn a spot in the finals. De Jong pinned top-ranked Haley Armstrong of Atlantic in the other semifinal bout.
Robinson opened Thursday (Feb. 6), the first day of the tournament, by pinning No. 11 seed Ava Trende of New Hampton-Turkey Valley in 1:00. Robinson went on to face No. 3 seed Emma Cook of Colfax-Mingo and pinned Cook in 1:36 in the opening period of the quarterfinals.
Humboldt's 170-pound sophomore Danica Diedrick went 1-2 and was eliminated in the consolation round to finish her season at 42-9. Diedrick opened against Kira Cox of Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center and lost by fall in 1:20. In her first match on the consolation side, Diedrick dec. Emma Walker of Panorama, 8-4. Diedrick faced No. 1 seed Briar Blake of North Tama and was pinned in 1:00. Blake was upset earlier in the quarterfinals by Samantha Lyons of Fairfield, 10-3.
