Storm Lake tops Wildcat boys, 72-64

The Humboldt boys’ basketball team ended their regular season in a 72-64 homecourt loss to sixth-ranked Storm Lake on Thursday night, Feb. 20 in the Humboldt gym in non-conference action. Elliot Carlson scored 23 points, Mason Van Pelt had 13 and Coen Matson 12 to lead the Wildcats, 14-7 overall. Storm Lake was led by 6-2 point guard Cayd Boyd with 30.
Late rally lifts Wildcats past Lynx, 62-57
Humboldt manufactured a fourth quarter rally to topple the Webster City Lynx, 62-57 in a boys' North Central Conference game at Webster City on Monday night, Feb. 17. Elliot Carlson scored 20 points and Coen Matson added 12 to power the Wildcats, who moved to 14-6 overall, 11-3 in conference play. The Wildcats also had Jackson Dodd with nine, Jackson Flaherty with seven and Mason Van Pelt with six. Mickelson and Tesdahl led the Lynx with 11 points apiece. Willson made 10.
Humboldt boys over Algona, 71-56
Elliot Carlson and Jackson Dodd each scored 14 points to lead the Humboldt boys over Algona, 71-56 on Feb. 11 in Algona. Coen Matson added 13 and Mason Van Pelt had 10 for the Wildcats. Humboldt improved to 13-6 overall, 10-3 in the North Central Conference. Ben Helmers poured in 28 points to lead Algona. Burns was next with 13.
Post-season tournament pairings were announced for Class 3A on Feb. 17 and Humboldt has earned a No. 3 seed in Class 3A Substate 2.
The Wildcats will host No. 6 seed Algona on Monday, Feb. 24, 7 p.m. The winner will face either No. 2 seed Gilbert or No. 7 seed Winterset in a semifinal hosted by the highest seeded team on Feb. 27. The other half of 3A Substate 2 has No. 1 seed Storm Lake hosting No. 8 Denison-Schleswig and No. 4 seed Carroll hosting No. 5 Saydel in first round games. The substate final will be played on Monday, March 1, and will be hosted by the highest remaining seeded team.
