Wildcat boys rip Algona in substate opener, 90-48

HUMBOLDT – The Humboldt boys' basketball team opened post-season play at home Monday night (Feb. 24) with an impressive, 90-48 blowout victory over the Algona Bulldogs in a Class 3A opening round substate tournament game.

Humboldt jumped on Algona early, taking a 31-10 lead early in the second quarter and never let up as they held a 47-29 halftime advantage, 63-42 after three quarters. Both teams emptied their bench with 3:00 left in the final quarter.

Humboldt, 15-7, was led by senior guard/forward Elliot Carlson with 29 points. Coen Matson made 15, Chase Flaherty had 13 and Jackson Dodd made 11 as Humboldt sank 13 3-point baskets. Matson accounted for four from long range while Dodd and Flaherty each had three. Carlson also had a 3-pointer but scored most of his points in drives inside the lane or slashing, baseline drives.

Algona bows out at 8-14 overall. The Bulldogs were led by Ben Helmers with 26 points. Nathan Manse had 11, Levi Walker seven and Jacob Burns with four.

Humboldt moves into a substate semifinal round game at Gilbert on Thursday, Feb. 27, against the Gilbert Tigers (14-8), who beat Winterset, 70-45 in Gilbert Monday night. The other half of 3A Substate 2 had Storm Lake rolling to a 78-36 victory over Denison-Schleswig. Thursday night Storm Lake will host Carroll, an 84-51 winner over Saydel Monday night in Carroll.
