Colleen M. Petersen, age 56, of Sheldon passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. A visitation was held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon with burial taking place at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home; Sheldon.
Colleen Marie Petersen, the daughter of Phil and Wilma (Lehman) Crowl, was born on April 4, 1968, in Humboldt. She graduated from Humboldt High School in 1986. After high school, she continued her education, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in graphic arts from Morningside College, Sioux City, and later an Associate Degree in Nursing from Iowa Central Community College, Storm Lake and earned her Registered Nurse credential. She soon discovered her true passion was nursing, and she dedicated her life to caring for others. Colleen worked as a nurse at Sanford in Sheldon, where she touched the lives of countless patients with her compassion, expertise, and unwavering commitment. She found purpose and fulfillment in her nursing career, offering comfort and support to those in need.
As a mother, Colleen was one of a kind and everything to them. She poured her heart and soul into raising her children, Drew and Allie, always putting them above all else. Her love for them was boundless, and she created a warm, nurturing home where they felt special and cherished. Colleen’s strength, wisdom, and humor guided them through life’s challenges, and her legacy will live on in the values she instilled in them.
Colleen’s ability to love extended beyond her family. She had an infectious warmth and an open heart, along with always having something to make her friends laugh. She enjoyed spending time with loved ones, and her presence brought comfort and joy to those around her. She was also an animal lover, finding joy in the companionship of her dogs and cat, Ella Bean, Walter, and Peewee, who were always by her side.
Colleen passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls at the age of 56 years, 10 months, and 15 days. She is deeply missed by all who knew her, but her memory lives on through the many lives she touched, both as a compassionate nurse and as an incredible mother.
Left to cherish her memory are her two children, Drew and Liz Green of Archer, and Allie and Storm Swanson of Hartley; grandchildren: Bentley, Emmett, Aubriauna, Kamdyn, and Drew Jr. Green; brother, Bret (Candace) Crowl of Ackley; nephews, Ryan (Jennifer), Stefan (Ali Chambers), and Ian Crowl; and niece and nephew Kara Rewerts and Matt Rewerts; her beloved dogs and cat, Ella Bean, Walter, and Peewee; her grand-goats, Lucious, Powdered Sugar, Ramsey and Brown Torpedo; grand-asses, Bonnie, Clyde and Rooster; along with many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Phil and Wilma Crowl.
