HUMBOLDT - During their monthly meeting on May 19, the Humboldt Community School District Board of Directors discussed a variety of topics, from test scores to the recent passage of legislation banning cellphones in the classroom.
Board president Tate Satern began the meeting by recognizing the Champions for Children award recipients.
The district’s custodians were among those recognized at Monday’s Meeting.
Special Education teacher DeDe Merris and paraeducator Jen Larson were also recognized for going above and beyond for their students.
Middle school science teacher Kayla Long received the award for her part for her dedication to her students and her work with the food science program.
After the “Champions for Children” award recipients were honored, the board heard from members of the FFA who asked the board for permission to attend the National FFA Convention during the upcoming school year.
The chapter proposed that a minimum of six students go to the convention next year, leaving on October 28 and returning on November 1. The members will stay overnight in a hotel in Indianapolis and attend industry tours and keynote speakers during their trip. The board approved the trip.
After the FFA presentation, the district administrators recognized the school board for School Board Recognition Month, wearing matching t-shirts with a group picture of the school board on them. A meat and cheese tray was also served.
Superintendent Murray said, “It is School Board Appreciation Month, and we’re so appreciative of our school board and the work that you do and the support that we receive. I always appreciate that you put kids first, and I do appreciate that your questions are usually instructional questions that are meaningful to kids' activities, and as administrators, you don’t know how fortunate we feel that we’ve got a school board that backs us up when we carry out policies and procedures.”
“That’s what we need, and we’ve got a school board that provides the resources that we need to put these plans in place.”
