Wildcats slug Spencer, substate opener moved to Clarion

Humboldt's varsity baseball team capped their regular season in a 9-6 non-conference victory over Spencer on July 9 at Spencer. Humboldt moved to 25-6 on the year.
Humboldt honored its seniors in their final regular season home game on July 8 in a 12-1 victory over Storm Lake. Cyler Cirks earned the win pitching for Humboldt. Cirks, Valley Davis, Chase Hansen and Coen Matson all handled the pitching and limited the Tornadoes to three hits.
Humboldt went into the Independence Day Holiday weekend with a 23-6 record after edging the Emmetsburg E-Hawks, 7-6 on July 3 at Emmetsburg. Humboldt totaled seven timely hits and got a three-hit pitching performance from Valley Davis, who struck eight.
Humboldt wrapped up the North Central Conference portion of their schedule by sweeping Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in Humboldt on Monday night, June 30. The Wildcats won by scores of 11-1 and 15-3 to move to 21-6 overall, 11-3 and second in the NCC standings.
Humboldt dominated Estherville-Lincoln Central on July 1 at Estherville, 15-0 in a non-conference game.
Valley Davis pitched a five-hitter with seven strikeouts to lead the Humboldt baseball team to a 4-2 victory over the Mason City Riverhawks in non-conference play in Humboldt on June 27. Coen Matson and Keegan Groat each had two hits at bat for Humboldt. Mason City slipped to 15-10 with the loss.
Griffin Groat scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Humboldt baseball team past Spirit Lake, 6-5 in a non-conference game in Humboldt on Tuesday, June 24.
Post-season pairings are out and Humboldt will face Clear Lake in a Class 3A substate first round game at Clarion on Friday, June 11, starting at 7 p.m. The winner will likely play at Algona on Monday, July 14, 7 p.m. in a substate semifinal round contest. The game was moved to Clarion's artificial surface due to wet grounds in Humboldt. Algona will host winless Charles City in their July 11 opener. the other half of Class 3A Substate 3 has Boone hosting Hampton-Dumont-CAL and Waverly-Shell Rock hosting Webster City. The substate final will be on July 16 at 7 p.m. and hosted by the highest remaining seeded team. Algona has the top seed in Substate 3.
