Extreme cold and sub-zero windchills expected for Humboldt County

Humboldt County EMA Coordinator Kyle Bissell has released the following statement for immediate release regarding the severe cold forecast.

HUMBOLDT - The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Winter Weather Statement for our area due to the extreme cold temperatures forecasted starting tonight (12/12) at 5 p.m. and lasting through early next week.

Windchills will be below zero with a low of -29 on Sunday, the 14th, at midnight. It is advised that persons stay inside as even short periods of exposure could cause life-threatening conditions. Humboldt County Emergency Management Agency has implemented its Extreme Temperatures Plan for this period. Warming Centers have been notified through the county. Those in need of these services should contact their city offices for more information.

Safety Precautions
- Stay indoors as much as possible and avoid unnecessary travel.
- Dress in layers, covering exposed skin and wear hats gloves and scarves when outdoors.
- Ensure pets are brought indoors and livestock have adequate shelter and water.
- Check on elderly neighbors, young children and individuals with limited access to heat.
- Use caution with space heaters, fireplaces and generators - follow safety guidelines to prevent fire and carbon monoxide risks.
