Fast start powers St. Edmond past Humboldt

HUMBOLDT AT CARROLL FEB. 14 IN 3A REGIONAL OPENER

Fort Dodge St. Edmond swept the Humboldt girls and boys basketball teams in a North Central Conference doubleheader in Fort Dodge on Monday night (Feb. 2). St. Edmond rolled to a 63-34 victory in the girls game and downed Humboldt 56-38 in the boys game. Chase Flaherty and Jackson Flaherty each scored nine points to lead the Humboldt boys, who are now 9-7 overall, 5-5 in the NCC. Hunter Horn scored 21 to lead the St Edmond boys (16-2, 11-1). Olivia Illg scored nine points to pace the Humboldt girls, who slipped to 7-10 and 3-9. St. Edmond improved to 13-4 and 9-3.

Wildcats upended at Clear Lake
Humboldt's varsity girls and boys basketball teams traveled to Clear Lake on Friday night (Jan. 30) and lost a pair of North Central Conference games to the Lions. The Wildcats boys lost 50-42. They are now 9-6 overall, 5-4 in the NCC. Chase Hansen and Valley Davis each scored 11 points for the Wildcats. Jackson Flaherty made nine and Chase Flaherty made eight. Theobald had 13 and Larson 12 to pace the Lions.

In a makeup game from earlier this month, Humboldt's girls traveled to Algona on Jan. 29 and lost 66-25 to the Bulldogs.

Wildcat boys topple HDC, girls fall
The Humboldt boys basketball team improved to 9-5 on the season, 5-3 in the North Central Conference, by holding off Hampton-Dumont-CAL, 64-52 on Jan. 27 in the Humboldt gym. Chase Flaherty scored 12 points, Valley Davis had 11 and Cade Birdsell made 10 to lead the Wildcats. The Humboldt girls fell to the Bulldogs, 59-41. Jada VanDeWalle scored 12 points and Ava Fischer and Kaleigh Vinsand each had 11 for Humboldt. HDC was led by Valley with 35 points.

Humboldt will host Iowa Falls-Alden on Feb. 6. Algona visits Humboldt on Feb. 10. The Wildcats begin Class 3A regional tournament play at Carroll on Saturday, Feb. 14, against the Carroll Tigers in a 7 p.m. game. The winner will play Forest City or Eagle Grove in Forest City on Feb. 18. The other half of 3A Region 7 has Algona hosting Southeast Valley and Clear Lake hosting Osage.
