Hendricks receives Musselman Award at banquet

The future looks bright for Humboldt boys’ wrestling.
The Wildcats, who are coming off a 22-7 dual season, will return seven of its eight wrestlers who competed in the Class 2A state tournament last month.
Numerous awards were presented by Wildcat veteran head coach Chad Beaman and his assistants at the team banquet held on March 2 at the high school cafeteria.
Broedy Hendricks, a 190-pound junior who finished state runner-up for the second time in three seasons, received the David Musselman Award as the team’s most outstanding wrestler for the 2025-26 season.
Hendricks also received the Bad Cat Award. Hendricks posted a 53-2 record and won his third North Central Conference individual championship. Hendricks now has a career won-loss record of 144-10.
Hendricks led the squad in takedowns (137), technical falls (15), wins (53), falls (22), winning percentage (96%) and total team points (158). He was second in nearfalls with 41. Braden Downs led with 58.
Jonny Hayden, the 138-pounder who was the lone senior to qualify for state, received the Hardest Worker Award at the banquet. Sophomore Caleb Vinsand, a state qualifier at 144 pounds, received the Most Improved Wrestler Award.
Joe Constable, a junior heavyweight, received the Stan Jensen Award. Constable moved to Humboldt last fall after placing fifth at state in Class 3A for Fort Dodge a year ago. A state ruling did not allow him to finish the season after he started out with a 6-0 record.
Senior Carson Chambers received the Michelle Jensen Memorial Scholarship. Rachel and Troy Frideres were recipients of the Booster of the Year Award.
Beaman recognized coaches Justin McDaniel, Mark Cirks, Tyler Vitzthum, Kyle Bergemann, Landon Halverson and Ryan Fredin. The middle school coaches were Zach Gotto and Jason Hardman.
“All of these guys do an outstanding job. They do a wonderful job working with the kids. They are unselfish. I can’t say enough about these guys,” Beaman said.
“Coach McDaniel has been with us for 26 years. It is very uncommon for a coach to be content as an assistant for that many years. He’s done a tremendous job,” Beaman said. “I couldn’t do this job without him.”
“This was Mark Cirks’ fifth year at the high school level. He does an incredible job with the Wildcat Wrestling Club. He’s led that for a long time,” Beaman said.
“Kyle Bergemann really liked the relationships he built with the kids this past season. He did an outstanding job. He was a 100% volunteer. Tyler Vitzthum was 100% volunteer. He’s a former Wildcat and it was his first year back at Humboldt. He was there every single day. Very happy to have him back,” Beaman said.
“Landon Halverson is another 100% volunteer. He was there every single day. Ryan Fredin is another 100% volunteer. He was there as many days as work would allow,” Beaman said.
“Mark and Kyle were in the club room almost every single day as well. They put in a ton of time and commitment all season,” Beaman said.
“I can’t thank these coaches enough. They are always positive and optimistic. They develop great relationships with our athletes. They are all in it for the right reasons,” Beaman said.
The Wildcat senior class consisted of Carson Chambers, Ayden Fiengo, Dylan Frideres, Jonny Hayden and Keaton Taylor.
Humboldt’s junior class, in addition to Hendricks and Constable, included two-time state qualifier in Jaxson Kirchhoff (150, 39-19, 109-49 career), Carson Ireland (18-18), Spencer Scranton (12-14), James Ellis and Brooks Hinners (2-8).
The sophomore class includes Mason Frideres, Channing Smith, Henry Kramer (state qualifier, 31-31, 52-48), Caden Fredin (9-15), Hayden Devers, Carter Meier, Braden Downs (state qualifier, 43-16, 75-35), Adrian Foster, Caleb Vinsand (state qualifier, 32-22, 35-25), Johnatan Cabrera-Lara and Grant Goodell.
A talented freshman class includes Jadyn Gotto, Tate Halverson (state qualifier, 36-22), Tanner Lewis, Karson Meier, Kole Olson, Weston Paul, Karson Reinhardt (state qualifier (37-16), Bentley Rodgers, Owen Stattelman and Gary Steburg.
Beaman took time out to recognize the cheerleaders, they include Aubry Fisher, Mady Powers, Aranza Gonzalez, Alivia Goodell, Brynn Malo, Claire Olson, Kendall Works and Claire Dieleman.
