Tony Beach to lead HHS boys’ soccer

Humboldt boys’ soccer coach Tony Beach begins his first season at the helm with optimism, thanks to the return of 10 lettermen from last season’s squad that finished 7-9-1 overall, 6-5-1 in the North Central Conference.
Beach, who has head coaching experience in other sports, is looking forward to the new campaign for the Wildcats.
“I’ve enjoyed my time as an assistant coach for the last several years. Joe Hadar was a great coach to work under. He actually started the program and it has been great to see how the program has advanced over the years. It started out as a coed team and now our school has both a boys’ and girls’ program. They are successful and the community is really getting involved and behind the programs,” Beach said.
Senior Karson Rubel has played goalkeeper in each of the last three seasons and brings back a wealth of experience at the net and in the field. Last year he recorded 164 saves. Yahel Sanchez and Nico Christensen, both juniors, saw action at the net last year as well.
Christensen was second on the team in goals scored last year with six. He also made six assists. He was also a third-team all-conference pick.
Other lettermen include senior Jonny Hayden, senior Silvestre Antonio, junior Angel Ruelas, junior Ike Fowler, junior Pablo Cuz Che, sophomore Johnatan Cabrera, senior Obed Antonio, Rubel, Christensen and Sanchez.
“Karson Rubel brings back a lot of experience at goalkeeper. I also want to let others give the position a try because you always need to have depth,” Beach said.
“I am impressed with the fact we have 31 people out this spring. The kids are working hard in pre-season practice and I feel like we have a good mix of kids in all four grades,” Beach said. “We have nine freshmen out, which is a good number.”
“We graduated some really good seniors from last year so it is time for the next grades to move up and take their turn,” Beach said. “I see a lot of positive from the kids so far.”
“We put a strong emphasis on team. No one is any better than anyone else. If we all help each other out then we can be successful together,” Beach said. “If you are on the sideline, be ready when the coach calls you to step in and play.”
