WSR sidelines Humboldt baseball team, 8-2

No. 9 ranked Waverly-Shell Rock scored five runs in the fifth inning and went on to defeat the Humboldt baseball team, 8-2 in a Class 3A substate semifinal round game in Waverly on Monday night, July 13. WSR advanced into a substate final at North Polk on July 15 against North Polk. North Polk beat Gilbert, 4-0 in the other semifinal round game. Humboldt finishes its season at 21-9 overall.

Wildcats hold off Algona in substate opener, 8-5
Humboldt scored five runs in the fourth inning and held off the Algona Bulldogs, 8-5 in a Class 3A Substate tournament opening round game in Algona on Friday night, July 10.

The victory sent Humboldt, now 21-8, into a semifinal round game in Waverly on Monday night, July 13 against Waverly-Shell Rock. Waverly-Shell Rock downed Nevada, 5-2 in Waverly on Friday night. The other half of the substate had top-seeded North Polk (25-7) whipping Hampton-Dumont-CAL 17-0 in North Polk while Gilbert (14-14) blanked Webster City, 10-0 in Gilbert. North Polk will host Gilbert in a semifinal round contest on July 13. The substate final will be played on July 15 and hosted by the highest seeded remaining team.

Humboldt senior pitcher Valley Davis earned the win on the mound for the Wildcats as he worked 3.1 innings scattering five hits, two walks and struck out three. Grant Goodell threw two and one-third innings allowing three runs, three hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Chase Hansen pitched the final inning allowing no runs, no hits one walk and two strikeouts.

Griffin Groat made three hits, including an inside-the-park home run in the first inning to lead Humboldt's 11-hit attack. Avon Sutterfield doubled and singled. Jackson Flaherty singled twice. Dane Clark doubled. Jaxson Kirchhoff, Caden Fredin and Hansen all hit safely.
