Girls take 2nd at state wrestling; AAU tourney is Feb. 7

The Humboldt girls’ wrestling team presented their runner-up state tournament trophy to the school in a gathering Monday night at the high school. The team took 16 girls to the state tournament in Coralville Jan. 22-23. Of those, 11 contributed points to the team's 124-point second place team finish. Waverly Shell-Rock took the state crown with 256 team points. Humboldt was paced by Kendal Clark's runner-up finish at 170 pounds and Maria Elizondo's third place finish at 160 pounds. "It was a total team effort," Wildcats coach Chad Beaman said. He was impressed by his team's aggressiveness with 26 pins for the tournament. "It's exciting to look back and see the growth we have had in just two seasons," Beaman said.
Humboldt will be hosting the north central Iowa AAU District Wrestling tournament on Sunday, Feb. 7. Wrestlers from third to eighth grade will be competing for a chance to advance to the Iowa State AAU Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena on Feb. 27-28. About 370 wrestlers are expected from 14 counties including: Boone, Calhoun, Franklin, Greene, Hamilton, Hancock, Hardin, Humboldt, Marshall, Story, Tama, Webster, Winnebago and Wright. Weigh-ins will take place between 7-8 a.m. Wrestling will take place in the high school and middle school gyms with weigh-ins and awards at the high school.
