Cirks drops 3-2 match on day 2 at state wrestling

Humboldt 106-pound freshman Cyler Cirks saw his hopes of earning a medal at the Class 2An state wrestling tournament fall just short on Friday morning (Feb. 18) inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Cirks, needing one win to reach the podium and be one of the top eight, dropped a hard-fought, 3-2 to Dylan Heater of Grinnell in the consolation round. Cirks finishes his year at 32-13.

On Thursday, day one, Cirks won his wrestle back match in the consolation round to keep his season alive. Cirks beat Mitch Schmauss of Crestwood, 6-2.

Humboldt's David Muir at 120, Jayden Gargano at 126 and Joe Weydert at 152 all saw their seasons end in the consolation round on day one.

Muir, a senior, was pinned by Tate Slagle of Algona in 1:35. Muir closes out at 27-11.

Gargano lost 7-3 to Derrick Bass of Davenport Assumption to see his season end. Gargano, a junior, finishes the year at 31-11.

Weydert suffered a heartbreaking 7-5 overtime loss to Jaxson Roozeboom of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley after leading 5-1 entering the final period. Weydert finishes 31-9.

All 4 Wildcat wrestlers fall in 1st round of state wrestling
Humboldt's four-man contingent of wrestlers fell in the first round on Thursday morning.

Cyler Cirks lost 7-3 to Ethan Skoglund of Sergeant Bluff-Luton.

David Muir fell 7-2 to Carson Less of West Delaware.

Jayden Gargano was pinned by Bo Koedam of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in 3:26.

Joe Weydert lost 11-4 to Isaiah Fenton of Burlington Notre Dame.
