Goodell, Cirks, Gargano alive on consolation side at state wrestling

Humboldt's Cyler Cirks at 113 and Jase Goodell at 152 both suffered quarterfinal round losses at the state wresting tournament in Des Moines but both are alive on the consolation side after day two of Class 2A action at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Humboldt senior Jayden Gargano is still alive on the consolation side at 126 pounds.

Cirks lost a 6-2 decision to No. 4 seed Kaden Weber of Nevada. On the consolation side Friday afternoon, Cirks, 35-8, will face No. 9 seed Carter Schmauss of Crestwood. Goodell lost his quarterfinal round match to No. 1 seed Cooper Sanders of Vinton-Shellsburg, 6-0. Goodell, 40-4, will wrestle No. 5 seed Brent Yonkovic of West Delaware on Friday afternoon.

Gargano kept his medal hopes alive with a pair of consolation round wins on Thursday afternoon. Gargano won 11-1 over Ragen Hasche of Central Lyon/George-Little Rock. Gargano followed with a 4-0 victory over Logan McDonals of Grinnell. Friday afternoon Gargano will face No. 6 seed Brodie Conner of Albia.

Sophomore Brady Beers at 138 pounds and Gaige Allen at 182 pounds were both eliminated in the tournament Thursday. Beers was pinned by Niles of Sinn of Williamsburg in 3:10. Beers finishes his season at 21-25. Allen beat Chase Diaz of Davenport Assumption, 7-2, in his first consolation match Thursday. Later Allen was pinned by Garrett McHugh of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in 3:24 to see his season come to an end. Allen closes out his junior season at 31-15.

DAY ONE AT STATE
Cirks and Goodelll both won their second round matches after receiving a bye on day one of the Class 2A state wrestling tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Cirks pinned Brayden Maury of West Delaware in 5:02 after trailing a tight match in the first two periods. Goodell controlled Coy DeBoer of Sheldon/South O'Brien from the opening whistle and pinned DeBoer in 1:26.

Humboldt senior Jayden Gargano won his 126-pound first round match, 7-3 over Kaiden Parker of Oskaloosa, and then was edged 1-0 by Algona's Barrett Morgan, sending Gargano into the second round consolation on Thursday afternoon.

Humboldt junior 182-pounder Gaige Allen won his first round match in sudden victory one, 5-3 over Wayne Johnston of Knoxville. He was later pinned in 3:27 by No. 2 seed Jarrett Roos of Sheldon/South O'Brien in 3:27.
Sophomore Brady Beers dropped his first round match to Easton O'Brien of Atlantic, by fall in 2:20, sending Beers into a second round consolation bout on Thursday afternoon, where he will face Nile Sinn of Williamsburg.
