Goodell 5th, Gargano 6th in state wrestling

Humboldt's 126-pound senior Jayden Gargano exults after he defeated Albia's Brodie Conner, 5-2, in the consolation round of the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines on Friday, Feb. 17. The victory assured Gargano he would finish in the top eight and earn a medal. He went on to place sixth while teammate Jase Goodell was sixth.
Humboldt High senior wrestlers Jase Goodell finished fifth at 152 pounds and Jayden Gargano placed sixth at 126 pounds in today's consolation finals of the Class 2A state tournament in Des Moines at Wells Fargo Arena.
The No. 8 seed Goodell defeated Brenden Heying of Benton Community, 5-4 in the consolation final for fifth. Earlier in the day Goodell lost 9-7 to Lucas Kral of Garner-Hayfield/Ventura in the consolation semifinals.
The No. 10 seed Gargano lost 5-2 to No. 3 seed Amare Chavez of South Tama in the fifth-place consolation final. Earlier on Saturday, Gargano lost 4-2 to No. 9 seed Jerren Gille of Dubuque Wahlert.
FRIDAY RECAP
Gargano won two matches on Friday, day three, of the state tournament. Gargano defeated Brodie Conner of Albia, 5-2, then followed with a 5-4 victory over Algona's Barrett Morgan. On Saturday, Gargano will face Jerren Gille of Wahlert Dubuque. A win would send Gargano into the third/fourth place match Saturday afternoon. A loss would drop him down to the fifth/sixth place match.
Goodell, who lost in the quarterfinals to No. 1 seed Cooper Sanders, 6-0, defeated Brent Yonkovic of West Delaware, 4-2. Saturday morning Goodell will tangle with Garner-Hayfield/Ventura sophomore Lucas Kral. A win would send Goodell into the third/fourth place match. A loss would drop him to the fifth/sixth place match.
Humboldt sophomore 113-pounder Cyler Cirks, who lost his quarterfinal round match, 6-2 to Kaden Weber of Nevada, lost Friday to Carter Schmauss of Crestwood, 9-4, eliminating Cirks from the tournament.
