HUMBOLDT – For the Humboldt High School Girls Golf Team, this year’s season is all about the short game. Focusing just as much on mental fitness as the physical game.
Jess Harklau, returning for her 19th season as Head Coach, led the team to sixth place in the North Central Conference golf tournament last season. Over the season, the team scored a combined adjusted average of 221.77.
“Goal-wise, for the team is to work more on our mental and short game. Getting really confident, making sure that when the girls go into a golf meet that they’re confident in the rules, what to do in situations and can go out and play without a coach being right there to tell them what to do. I want them real confident in what they’re doing.”
This season, Harklau plans to emphasize the short game.
“That’s where all your strokes happen. You know, you can get a two hit, two shots up to the green, and then three chip and five, but you walk away with an eight, and you were there in two shots. So, the short game and that’s what we’re working on today. It’s always been a big focus every season, the short game, and getting more confident around the green because there’s nothing worse than getting up there and four putting or five putting. And so that’s probably our main focus.”
She said, “We have seven seniors but only three of them have played on varsity, a lot of freshmen, so a lot of new learning. So, you know, not too many high expectations. Taking one golf meet at a time is how I approach things. And then we build off that first golf meet. Okay, what do we need to work on? What do we need to get better on? And progress from there through the season.”
Joining the team this season are six freshmen: Shayla Berte, Salem Bonnstetter, Morgan Dickey, Elizabeth Heider, Ellie Lemmenes and Sophia List.
The returning seniors who played last season are Asja Anderson, Macy Berte, Mya Essing, Aubrey Jamaica, Morgan Mayall, and Shelby Wood. Also returning are sophomores Juliane Cook and Livia Stewart.
The letterwinners bringing their experience and leadership to the course this season are Morgan Mayall, Asja Anderson, and Macy Berte.
