Humboldt boys’ wrestling entered the new season with a lot of new faces in the starting lineup.
After the first two weeks of the season, those newcomers are making a positive impact and fueling optimism for the rest of the season according to head coach Chad Beaman.
Led by individual champions Broedy Hendricks at 190 pounds and Caleb Vinsand at 150, the Wildcats claimed the team title of the Dan Christensen Invitational tournament at Central Decatur last Friday, Dec. 12.
Humboldt totaled 220 points to outdistance Ottumwa (183.5) and Albia (164.5) in the 16-team field of schools.
Hendricks, the top-ranked junior in Class 2A, improved to 10-0 on the season and won his 100th career victory in the process. He won by two falls and a major decision. He beat Brian Snyder of Centerville in the finals, 14-3.
Vinsand, a sophomore, moved to 9-2 on the season after beating Ben Blizek of Centerville in the finals at 150, 9-3. Vinsand won his first three matches of the day by fall.
“To win tournaments like that, you have to get contributions from all 14 weight classes. Every point matters. This is the first invitational, double elimination tournament that we been to in a long time where all 14 weight classes placed,” Beaman said.
Humboldt competed in a conference double dual at Algona on Dec. 16 which included Charles City.
The Wildcats will be in the Don Miller Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 20. It will be their final outing before the Christmas break. Humboldt returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 3, at Osage.
