GREGORY W. BURKHART

Greg Burkhart, age 67 of Humboldt, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2025, at his new residence of two days at Springvale Assisted Living in Humboldt. Previously he had been living in Fairmont, MN. Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 26, 2026, at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt at 11 a.m. with visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. Gregory William Burkhart, the son of William Paul and Elizabeth May (Ackerson) Burkhart, was born on Nov. 26, 1958, in Iowa City. He was a fighting survivor all his life. Born five weeks prematurely due to complications of the Rh factor, he set a world record at the time of his birth of having the quickest complete blood exchange transfusions twice because of his severe intrauterine anemia. In 2019 he was diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer and stopped smoking. He survived for seven years with a disease that 65% of the people die from in five years. He endured surgeries, chemotherapies, immunotherapies, clinical trials and radiation treatments through the Mayo Health System.
He graduated from the Humboldt Community School District in 1977 and then attended Iowa Central Community College. He had jobs with Control Data and Seagate as a computer technician with regular travels to Southeast Asia and later making daily trips into Mexico where he worked. Later, he was self-employed at GB’s Computer in Fairmont as a computer technician until his retirement in 2023.
He was a collector of many things including toolboxes, hand tools with many pliers, screwdrivers and wrenches, padlocks, lockboxes and Lodge Cast Iron Cookware. He enjoyed flying his plane around the Midwest and drove his 1994 red Miata to all Big 10 Stadiums watching the Iowa Hawkeyes play away football games. He was a part of the WW2 100th Bomb Group. His father flew as a top turret gunner and Greg took him to reunions all over the United States and even to his WWII base in England.
Left to cherish Greg’s memory is his brother, Marc (Lori) Burkhart of Bailey Island, ME; nephews, Matthew (Crystal) Burkhart of Denver, CO; Nathan (Katie) Burkhart and their children, Avery and Owen, of Maple Grove, MN; Devin (Sarah) Burkhart, and their children, Soren, Leander, and Iggy, of Fairlee, VT; and Jordan (Katie) Burkhart and their son, Finn, of Auburn, ME; cousin and local caretaker, Verlus (Sharon) Burkhart of Fairmont, MN; aunt, Helen Ackerson of Keokuk;
and various cousins and numerous second cousins with whom he enjoyed family reunions where he would arrive unannounced and leave quietly without people knowing he was gone, just like his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Betty; three sisters in infancy due to the Rh factor; maternal grandparents, Albin and Edith Ackerson formally of Humboldt; and paternal grandparents, Paul and Minnie Burkhart formally of Missouri Valley.
