A relative newcomer to America, the zucchini squash has proved itself to be a very versatile vegetable that can be used in side and main dishes as well as in breads and desserts. The zucchini is a member of the melon and cucumber family. Although zucchini has been eaten in South and Central America for years, the variety of summer squash that is familiar was developed in Italy. The name zucchini comes from the Italian term “zucchino” meaning small squash. Humboldt's varsity girls' cross country team placed second and the boys were fourth in the team scoring of the Ballard Huxley Invitational held Monday (Sept. 16) at Huxley. The Wildcat girls had 54 team points. Gilbert was first with 32 points. Humboldt's boys totaled 117 points while Creston took the boys' title with 74 points.Sam Larson was third overall in leading the Humboldt girls in 15:47. Maddie Kampen ran sixth in 15:58, followed by Kate Curran 10th in 16:40, Avery Terwilliger 14th in 17:04 and Kessa Kuyper 21st in 17:44. In the boys' scoring, Jake Miller ran fourth overall in 17:30. Michael Bowden was 12th in 18:19 and Demetrius Friedl 26th in 18:58. Humboldt exploded for a 42-7 halftime lead and went on to defeat Iowa Falls-Alden, 42-22 in a Class 3A District 3 football game played at Mason Maach Field in Humboldt Friday night (Sept. 13).The Wildcats scored on every possession of the first half right up until just before halftime as they pushed their season record to 3-0 overall. Bomgaars has announced plans to build a new store in the Humboldt Business Park along Highway 169 in north Humboldt. Construction should begin soon on the 27,000 square foot store with completion scheduled for the spring of 2014. Sande Construction of Humboldt was selected as the general contractor on the project. Dave Meyer, senior vice-president and Chief Operating Officer of Bomgaars, said they are excited to have a larger store and additional outdoor space. We’re looking forward to being able to offer our customers more products in the larger store and we’re happy to be part of the Humboldt Business Park,” Meyer said. “We are thrilled Bomgaars chose to build a new store in our community and we’re very happy they decided to build in the Humboldt Business Park. It sets the tone for the park. We’ve focused on commercial business for the park and this is a perfect fit,” Alissa Reinholdt, Humboldt County Economic Development Director, said.
