New Sumner Avenue Bridge now open for business

After many delays to due weather, geological borings, the possibility of endangered environmental species and general architectural issues with a multiple span concrete bridge, the new Sumner Avenue Bridge officially reopened for traffic Friday morning. City leaders held a brief ribbon cutting in front of about 40 interested citizens at 8:30 a.m., with cars whizzing buy a few minutes later. That is a scene that hasn’t happened since mid-March 2014, more than 15 months ago. “We have a beautiful bridge that we can be proud of for the next 100 years in our community,” Humboldt Mayor Walter Jensen said before cutting the ribbon. A more formal ceremony dedicating the bridge will be held once the veteran’s memorial overlook is completed. For a full report and photos over the past 15 months of the bridge progress, read the July 2, Humboldt Independent, on newsstands next Thursday, or subscribe today by clicking on the link at the top of the page.
