Humboldt girls in 7-0 victory over Cadets

Ellie Jacobson pitched a one-hitter and struck out 14 Iowa Falls-Alden batters to power the Humboldt softball team past the Cadets in a North Central Conference game in Humboldt on July 1. Humboldt collected six hits and had no errors in moving to 6-0 in the NCC, 12-1 overall.

Mady Lange (triple) and Kendal Clark (double) each had two hits for Humboldt. Jori Hajek hit a double.

Wildcat girls in 10-0 victory
The Humboldt softball team shutout Pocahontas Area 10-0 in five innings Tuesday night (June 30) in Humboldt.

Reagan Lee earned the win pitching for Humboldt. Lee scattered four hits, struck out three, walked one and hit one batter.

Kendal Clark went 3-for-3 at bat with five runs batted in to lead Humboldt's batting order at the plate. Ellie Jacobson was 2-for-2.

The Wildcats host Algona on Thursday, July 2, in a game that will determine the outright champion of the NCC.

Humboldt visits Clear Lake on Friday, July 3.

HHS boys in 7-2 victory at Clarion

Humboldt picked up another North Central Conference victory Monday night in Clarion by posting a 7-2 victory.

Cade Witzke earned the win on the mound for the Wildcats, who move to 6-2 overall, 2-0 in conference play.

The Wildcats traveled to Boone on Tuesday, June 30, and lost an 8-0 non-conference game to the Toreadors.

Jacobson reaches 1,000 career strikeouts in 12-0 victory

Humboldt senior pitcher Ellie Jacobson passed 1,000 career strikeouts in the Wildcats’ 12-0 shutout victory over Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Monday night in Clarion.

Jacobson made seven strikeouts and scattered three hits for Humboldt, which improved to 10-1 overall, 5-0 in league play.

Jacobson now has 1,002 strikeouts. Carlie Thompson was 2-4 at bat with a triple to lead Humboldt’s 10-hit attack. Addie Thompson was 2-3 with a double and Kendal Clark hit a double.

Humboldt hosts Pocahontas on Tuesday in a varsity only game at 7 p.m.

Eagle Grove man rescued from Des Moines River

Quick action by campers and a fast response from Humboldt Fire and Rescue and Humboldt EMS may have saved an Eagle Grove man’s life this evening.
The Humboldt Fire Department and Humboldt EMS and Ambulance were paged to Gotch Park shortly before 6:30 p.m. Sunday night. There was a report of a swimmer in the East Fork of the Des Moines River going above and below the water.
“We were floating down the river and the current got him and sucked him under. The current was too strong, so we got out and ran along the bank where we could get a stick to him,” said 16-year-old Maddox Konopasek of Eagle Gove. Maddox and his 19-year-old brother, Chance Konopasek, also of Eagle Grove, were among those who rescued the victim, who was identified as 21-year-old Latrell Word, also of Eagle Grove.
“I saw his head keep bobbing up and down. He was screaming for help, but in a panic, he would go under the water,” Chance Konopasek said.

Many activities planned for Humboldt 4th

There will be a number of events going on in Humboldt next week, starting with everyone’s favorite, shopping. On Wednesday, July 1, there will be Sidewalk Sales in downtown Humboldt from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. There will be many items on display for sale at special prices. Help support the merchants who support your family by shopping locally.
On Thursday, July 2, Humboldt High School Wildcat softball team will be hosting Algona, with JV action starting at 6 p.m. and the varsity game beginning at 7:30 p.m.
The Humboldt Farmer’s Market will be hosting its regular weekly run on Wednesday, July 1 from 4-7 p.m. at Bicknell Park, and again on Saturday, July 4, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park. Come check out fresh grown produce and homemade items from your friends and neighbors.

After delay, 2020 graduates recognized

The Humboldt High School class of 2020 graduated with an outdoor ceremony on Sunday, June 21. Read the article in this week's Humboldt Independent and see photos for purchase on this website. Click on the Buy a Photo link at the top of this page.

A total of 111 seniors from the class of 2020 took part in graduation ceremonies held Sunday, June 21, on Mason Maach Field at Humboldt High School. There were 115 senior graduates.
Delayed several weeks because of Covid-19, the graduation ceremony took place with students social distanced on the football field and family and friends in the bleachers and on lawn chairs.
Students entered the football field through an arch made of blue, gold and white balloons. They were led by Activities Director Greg Thomas, School Board President Tate Satern and Superintendent Mike Sherwood.
Four seniors shared Valedictorian honors with perfect 4.0 grade point averages. The Valedictorians were Lauren Erickson, Hope Hjelmeland, Holly Kirchhoff and Mackenzie McCartan. Salutatorian with a 3.97 grade point average was Jacob Thurm.
