Wildcat boys 3rd in qualifying meet, advance 7 events to state

The Humboldt boys track team placed third in the team scoring at Nevada and had five automatic qualifiers, seven overall, for next week's Class 3A state track meet in Des Moines.

In their Class 3A qualifying meet on May 13, Humboldt had four first-place finishes and one runner-up.

The top two place winners in each event along with the eight best statewide advance to the state meet in Des Moines May 20-22.

Quinton Orr won the 1,600 and 3,200-meters events while Eric Wittrock won the 800-meters. Humboldt's 1,600-meter medley relay of Lance Coon, Orr, Cale Hundertmark and Wittrock took first in 3:36.71.

Humboldt's 4x200 relay took second in 3:28. The foursome consisted of Hundertmark, Carson Berte, Orr and Wittrock. Cale Hundertmark finished fourth in the 400-meters in 52.65 but earned an at-large berth.

Wildcat girls 2nd in qualifier, advance 13 events to state track

The Humboldt High School girls' track team placed 2nd in a Class 3A state qualifying meet in Nevada on May 13 and secured 12 automatic qualifying events to state, 13 events overall.

The top two place winners in each event and the next eight best statewide will advance to the state meet in Des Moines May 20-22. The state field will be finalized on Friday.

Humboldt's winners include:
-the 4x100 relay of Morgan Olson, Alexis Hansen, Jori Hajek and Paige DeWinter in 51.26.
-Lily Groat in the 400-meter hurdles.
-Jori Hajek in the 100-meter hurdles.
-Kendal Clark in the discus.
-Kendal Clark in the shot put.
-Paige DeWinter in the 200-meters.
-Morgan Olson in the 100-meters.
-the shuttle hurdle relay of Jori Hajek, Rylie Satern, Jennika Beach, Lily Groat.

Cased closed on Fokken's career

After 45 years, Gayle Fokken is retiring from the law office of Arends, Lee, Emick, Legvold and Myott. An Open House is planned in her honor on Friday, May 21, from 3-5 p.m. at the law office.

After 45 years working in the Arends, Lee, Emick, Legvold and Myott Law Office, Gayle Fokken says it’s time to slow down.
She officially retired on Jan. 1, 2021, but continued to work through tax season and will continue to come back to help during tax season or as needed.
The law office will host an Open House to honor Gayle’s 45 years of service on Friday, May 21, from 3-5 p.m.
“I’m at full retirement age. My grandkids are active in sports. Marc (Arends) and Bob (Lee) have transitioned the practice to the three younger attorneys. The timing was good for me to slow down,” Fokken said.

Humboldt sports camps scheduled this summer

Humboldt will host several youth sports camps over the summer.

SOCCER CAMP

Humboldt soccer camp will be held June 21-25 at the soccer field (old football field) in north Humboldt.
The TinyTykes Cubs (ages 3-4) will run from 9-10 a.m. and cost $81 per player. TinyTykes Lions (ages 5-6) session will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon and cost $105 per player.
Half Day session for ages 7-18 will be from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and cost $145 per player. Full day session for ages 9-18 will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m and cost ($180).
A team of international professional soccer players will lead the camp sessions. Register online at challengersports.com.

Lentz Funeral Home completes purchase

Lentz Funeral Home is purchasing Harris Funeral Homes effective July 1.
Harris Funeral Homes has locations in Gilmore City, West Bend and Mallard.
Lentz Funeral Home has locations in Algona, Burt, Livermore, Humboldt, Spirit Lake and Fort Dodge.
“It’s a good fit for us geographically, plus we are excited that two staff members from Harris Funeral Home will be joining our staff. Tracy Johnston will join us full-time and Jenny Girres will continue part-time,” Jayme Lentz, funeral home owner, said.
Phil Harris has owned and operated Harris Funeral Homes since 1987. He’s been in the funeral business since 1975. Harris, who lives in West Bend, said he plans to retire after selling the business.
“We’re glad it will continue as a family-owned business with Jayme and Melissa,” Harris said.

Shutout victory moves Wildcat boys to 13-2

Humboldt picked up another shutout victory by stopping Fort Dodge 1-0 on Thursday night (May 13). The Wildcats are 13-2 overall.

The Humboldt boys' soccer team won their seventh straight contest by shutting out East Sac County, 7-0 on May 11 on the road.

The Wildcats host Garner-Hayfield/Ventura on May 14.

Humboldt will compete in the GH/V tournament in Garner on May 15.

The Humboldt girls' soccer team snapped a seven-game losing streak by shutting out Fort Dodge, 2-0 on May 13 at Fort Dodge.

Humboldt improved to 4-10 on the season.

HHS girls fall at East Sac County, 1-0
The Humboldt girls' soccer team suffered a 1-0 overtime loss at East Sac County on Tuesday night (May 11). Makayla Meyer scored the only goal to lift ESC, which improved to 10-3 on the season.

The Wildcats travel to Ventura on Thursday, May 20, to face Garner-Hayfield/Ventura. Humboldt hosts Webster City on May 21.

The Wildcats begin post-season tournament play at home on Monday, May 24, against Belmond-Klemme in a 4:15 p.m. regional opener. The winner will play at Iowa Falls on May 26 against Iowa Falls-Alden, which drew a first round bye.
