Farmland values reach all-time high

Farmland values increased by an average of more than $2,000 an acre from 2021, according to the annual CARD survey, conducted in association with Iowa State University. Submitted photo.

One year after skyrocketing 29 percent, the average value of an acre of Iowa farmland jumped another 17 percent, or $1,660, to $11,411 per acre. The nominal value of an acre of farmland is again higher this year than at any point since Iowa State University began surveying values in 1941.
When adjusting for inflation, the 2022 average value surpasses the previous inflation-adjusted record value set in 2013 for the first time.
For Humboldt County, land values increased to an average value of $13,691 per acre in 2022, an increase of $2,185 from 2021’s average of $11,506. Humboldt County’s farmland values rose by 19 percent.

Winter storm underway, blizzard warning for Thursday afternoon, Friday

A significant winter storm in starting in the area late Wednesday afternoon and will be spreading across the state on Thursday. Iowa State Trooper Kyle Kluender of Humboldt and Humboldt County Sheriff Dean Kruger have advised not to travel unless it is an emergency. "We want everyone to driver with extreme caution and to be safe on the eve of this holiday season," Kruger said.

A winter storm warning is now in effect until noon on Thursday, Nov. 22. A blizzard warning is in effect from noon Thursday until 6 a.m. on Saturday.
Snow is beginning this afternoon and will continue intermittently through early Thursday. Winds will also increase Thursday and continue into Friday night when blizzard conditions are expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches, with locally higher amounts possible.
Wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph or greater may occur late Thursday through Friday. Extreme cold and wind chills of 20 to 40 below will be common.
Plan on periods of blizzard conditions along with very poor road conditions at times. Areas of blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions may impact the morning and definitely the evening commute. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 40 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.

Humboldt girls in 50-47 victory at Clarion

Humboldt's varsity girls' basketball team improved to 3-3 overall, 3-1 in North Central Conference play by edging the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowgirls, 50-47 in Clarion on Tuesday, Dec. 20.

Morgan Mann scored 27 points to power Humboldt. Paige Nelson, Reagan Lee and Ava Fischer each scored seven points for the Wildcats. Bella Opheim added two.

Humboldt was scheduled to host Garner-Hayfield/Ventura on Dec. 22 in their final game before the holiday break. That game has been postponed until Jan. 19. Humboldt's game at Belmond-Klemme on Jan. 2 has been moved to Feb. 6. Humboldt hosts Fort Dodge on Jan. 3 starting at 4:30 p.m. There will be no JV game.

The Wildcats host Webster City on Friday, Jan. 6.

Wildcats boys rough up Cowboys, 74-31

The Humboldt boys' basketball team climbed to 4-0 overall, 3-0 in North Central Conference play by roughing up the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys, 74-31 in an NCC game at Clarion on Tuesday, Dec. 20.

Corey Dettmann scored 16 points and Elliot Carlson made 14 to top the Wildcat scoring. Will Orness added 10 for Humboldt, which led 38-21 at halftime.

The Wildcats also got eight points from Josh Thurm, seven from Evan Hatcher and six from Tayeton Lohaus.

The Wildcats were scheduled to host Garner-Hayfield/Ventura on Thursday, Dec. 22, in their final game before the holiday break. That game has been moved to Jan. 19 due to inclement weather. Humboldt's next game is at home on Jan. 3 against Fort Dodge, at 5:45 p.m. The JV game has been cancelled. The Wildcats host Webster City on Jan. 6.

Goodell wins title, HHS 5th at Fort Dodge

Jase Goodell won the 152-pound title and Jayden Gargano was second at 132 to help carry the Humboldt boys wrestling team to fifth-place in the Don Miller Invitational Wrestling Tournament in Fort Dodge on Saturday, Dec. 17. Fort Dodge won the team title.

Humboldt competes in a conference meet at Clarion on Dec. 22.

Brian James Fuller, 75, of Johnston, IA, passed away Sunday, Nov. 27, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospital. Brian was a former resident and a 1965 graduate of Humboldt High School.
