EDWARD D. ALLEN

Edward David “Ed” Allen, 94, of Humboldt, passed away on Dec. 20, 2025 in the Long Term Care facility of the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.
He was the son of Edward David and Della Marie (Nowlan) Allen and was born on July 24, 1931, in Mason City. He was raised and educated in the Mason City area and graduated from Orchard High School. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Army. He was united in marriage to Marcele Marie Leach on March 20, 1951. They made their home in northern Iowa, residing in Charles City, Spencer and Storm Lake.
In 1971 they moved to Humboldt where Ed purchased Humboldt Springs Water. Previous to his work as a private business owner, he served 20+ years in the Army National Guard, was an Iowa Highway Patrolman, a pilot for the Iowa Highway Patrol, a special agent with the Iowa Bureau of Criminal Investigation and later Police Chief in Humboldt. He was a member of the United Congregation Church in Humboldt.

Hendricks wins title at Fort Dodge

Broedy Hendricks won the 190-pound class to lead the Humboldt boys' wrestling team at the Don Miller Invitational tournament in Fort Dodge on Dec. 20.

Hendricks won all three of his matches in dominant fashion as he improved to 16-0 on the season.

Humboldt finished seventh in the 11-team field with 111 points. Decorah (217.5), Iowa City West (176.5), Fort Dodge (157) and Algona (156.5) took the top four spots in the standings with Sioux Center (116.5) and Ankeny Centennial (115) ahead of Humboldt. Emmetsburg (72), Webster City (56.5), Sioux City East (45.5) and Sioux City Heelan (6.5) round out the standings.

Placing fourth for Humboldt was Spencer Scranton at 113, Caleb Vinsand at 150, Braden Downs at 157 and Tate Halverson at 175. Jaxson Kirchhoff was fifth at 165. Henry Kramer was fifth at 126. Ayden Fiengo was sixth at 215. Karson Reinhardt was sixth at 132.

Humboldt will be off until Jan. 3 when they travel to Osage.

HHS girls compete at Fort Dodge, Boone wrestling meets

The Humboldt girls' wrestling team capped a busy week by competing in the Fort Dodge tournament on Dec. 19 and at the Boone Invitational on Dec. 20.

At Fort Dodge the girls placed third in the team scoring with 144 points. Algona won with 210 points. Mason City was third at 146 in the 14-school field of teams.

Danica Diedrick won the 170-pound class while Laina Dettmann was third at 130. Mia Sorensen was third at 155 and Kennedy Robinson was third at 235. Madison Parker was fourth at 125. Gracey May took fourth at 115 and Dayton Cleghorn was fourth at 145.

Humboldt was 13th among 14 schools in the Boone Invitational last Saturday. Ames was the team champion.

Humboldt was led by Emilie Schriber who was fourth at 115 pounds. Elyse Olson was fifth at 140. Addie Meyer placed sixth at 190. Dayton Cleghorn was seventh at 145.

Clear Lake upends Humboldt girls, 61-48

No. 15 ranked Clear Lake used a third quarter run to pull away to a 61-48 victory over the Humboldt girls' basketball team in a North Central Conference game in the Humboldt gym on Friday night, Dec. 19.

Senior Ava Fischer poured in 27 points to power the Wildcats, who slipped to 3-3 overall, 2-2 in conference play. Jada VanDeWalle finished with eight points and Abby Armitage had four for Humboldt.

Clear Lake was led by 6-foot-4 center Ashleigh Amble with 19 points. Jacelyn Ainley and Taylor Schwenn each had 12 for Clear Lake, 6-0 and 4-0.

Humboldt will be off for the Christmas break and return to action on Jan. 3 at Mason City.

No. 1 Lions too much for HHS boys, 76-37

Top ranked Clear Lake proved to be too much for the Humboldt boys' basketball team as they rolled to a 76-37 victory over the Wildcats in a North Central Conference game in the Humboldt gym on Friday night, Dec. 19.

Chase Flaherty and Carson Rubel each scored six points to lead the Wildcats. Jackson Flaherty, Levi Rieck and Chase Hansen each had five for Humboldt, which enters the Christmas break at 3-2 overall, 2-1 in North Central Conference play.

Clear Lake, 4-0 and 2-0, was paced by Jaxson McIntire with 24 points. Trevor Theobald followed with 17 for the Lions, who led 44-20 at halftime.

Humboldt will be off for the Christmas break and return to action on Saturday, Jan. 3, at Mason City.

Wildcats win Michelle Jensen Invitational title

Humboldt crowned two champions and won the team title of the Michelle Jensen Invitational wrestling tournament on Dec. 16 in the Humboldt gym.

The Wildcats totaled 218 team points to take top honors. GTRA was runner-up with 199 and South Central Calhoun third at 140. A total of 14 schools competed in the event.

Laina Dettmann at 130 pounds and Danica Diedrick at 170 won individual titles for Humboldt. Second-place went to Madison Parker at 125, Mia Schluter at 135, Mia Sorensen at 155 and Addie Meyer at 190. Olyvia Satern took third at 110 along with Gracey May at 115.

Taking fourth was Gabiella Rodriguez at 190, Letty Jenson at 100, Emilie Schriber at 120 and Dayton Cleghorn at 145. Juliana Jose was fifth at 110. Arianna Rubio at 105 and Elyse Olson at 140 competed but didn't place in the top six.

Humboldt returns to action at the Fort Dodge tournament on Friday, Dec. 19. It will be their final outing before the holiday break.

Wildcat girls, boys sweep at Hampton

Humboldt's varsity girls and boys basketball teams traveled to Hampton on Dec. 16 and swept the Bulldogs in a North Central Conference matchup.

The Wildcat girls posted a 35-27 victory and the boys came out on top by a 49-38 final tally. Ava Fischer scored 14 points and collected 16 rebounds to power the Wildcats. Jada VanDeWalle made nine points, four rebounds and three steals. The girls improved to 3-2 overall, 2-1 in league play.

The boys are 3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference action. Both teams resume action at home on Friday, Dec. 19, in a conference matchup with Clear Lake.

Wrestlers go 2-1 at Algona

Humboldt sophomore Caleb Vinsand won the 150-pound class at Central Decatur on Dec. 12 in the Dan Christensen Invitational.

The Humboldt boys wrestling team went 2-1 on the night in a quad at Algona on Dec. 16.

The Wildcats lost a North Central Conference match to the Algona Bulldogs, 46-13, then beat Charles City (81-0) and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura (61-13).

Humboldt, 5-1 overall, 0-1 in the NCC, will return to action at the Don Miller Invitational at Fort Dodge on Saturday, Dec. 20. It will be the final outing for the Wildcats before the holiday break. Humboldt double dual at Fort Dodge St. Edmond on Dec. 18 which included Hampton, was postponed due to inclement weather.
