Humboldt boys top Lynx, girls fall

Humboldt’s varsity boys basketball team moved to 8-5 on the season, 4-3 in conference play by beating the Webster City Lynx, 47-37 on Friday night (Jan. 23) in Webster City. Chase Flaherty scored 12 points, Valley Davis 11 and Cade Birdsell 10 to lead Humboldt. The Humboldt girls fell to the Lynx, 44-39. HHS slipped to 7-6 overall, 3-5 in conference play.

Humboldt's varsity girl-boy basketball teams picked up a pair of North Central Conference victories in resounding fashion on Tuesday night, Jan. 20 in Humboldt.

The Girls buried Clarion-Goldfield-Dows 72-10 while the boys rolled to a 66-53 victory.

Ava Fischer scored 28 points and Jada VanDeWalle netted 11 to lead the Wildcat girls, who improved to 7-5 overall, 3-4 in conference play. Audrey Egland led CGD with six points. The visiting Cowgirls fell to 0-12 and 0-7.

MARCIA J. EDWARDS

Marcia Jean Edwards, 66, of Livermore, passed away Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, surrounded by family at her home.
A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at Lentz Funeral Home in Algona. Service will be livestreamed via Lentz Funeral Home’s website. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. and continue until the time of service.
Marcia was born Dec. 14, 1959, in Fort Dodge, to Floyd and Arlene (Cibert) Hawkins. She graduated from St. Edmond High School in 1978, attended Central Texas College and earned a cosmetology degree from La’James. She married Brian Edwards on July 15, 1978, in Fort Dodge.
A dedicated community volunteer and supporter of veterans’ and children’s causes, Marcia was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 415 in Livermore, assisted with Honor Flight fundraising, and supported St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Shriners.

DOROTHY M. HOVERSTEN

Dorothy Marie Hanson Hoversten, 96, of Bode and Algona, passed away peacefully on Jan. 18, 2026, at the Good Samaritan Home in Algona, surrounded by the love of her family.
Dorothy was born on April 26, 1929, and grew up with strong values of faith, family and community that guided her throughout her life. On June 1, 1952, she was united in marriage to Les Hoversten, with whom she shared many years of love and partnership until his passing in 2015.

Bert Kirchhoff, 91 of Humboldt, passed away Sunday, Jan. 11, 2026, at the Long Term Care Unit at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 15, at Zion Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Service was livestreamed via Zion Lutheran Church’s Facebook page and Lentz Funeral Home’s website https://www.hdezwebcast.com/show/bert-kirchhoff. Burial took place at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Humboldt. Services have been entrusted to Lentz Funeral Home of Humboldt. Online condolences may be left at www.lentzfuneralhome.com.

ARLOA M. RAPPLE

Arloa Marie Rapple, 84, of Humboldt, went to her Lord & Saviour, Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family.
Arloa Marie Hanke was born March 10, 1941 in Buena Vista County, the daughter of Louie and Mary (Boisen) Hanke. She grew up on farms near Early, working alongside her folks Louie and Mary (Boisen) Hanke and her brother LaDon. She attended Crestland High School in Early, where she was co-captain of the basketball team and was a junior queen attendant and senior homecoming queen. After high school, Arloa went on to attend Iowa State Teachers College (UNI). Following college, she moved to California for a short time. Returning to Iowa she began teaching in Rutland and later taught second grade at Taft Elementary where she taught for over 40 years. In 1975 Arloa was united in marriage to Darlow “Rip” Rapple until his death in 2007.

BETTY J. VORRIE

Betty Vorrie, 98, of Fort Dodge, beloved wife, mother and grandmother passed away peacefully on Jan. 12, 2026. Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 19, at Ullensvang Lutheran Church in Thor. Burial was in Blossom Hill Cemetery, Badger.
Betty Jane Vorrie was born on Feb. 22, 1927, in Badger, the daughter of Perry and Rose (Christenson) Bradley. She was baptized and confirmed at the Badger Lutheran Church in Badger. She attended the local school and graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School in 1945. She worked with her father in the family café and grocery store in Badger.
On Sept. 5, 1948, Betty was united in marriage with Carroll Lorelle Vorrie at the Badger Lutheran Church. They lived on a farm in the Thor area for 40 years, retired in the fall of 1988 and moved to Fort Dodge.

Robinson, Diedrick win NCC titles!

Kennedy Robinson and Danica Diedrick won individual titles to lead the Humboldt girls wrestling team to a runner-up finish in the North Central Conference tournament on Saturday, Jan. 17.

Robinson, a senior, won the 235-pound class to improve her record to 23-10 and Diedrick, a junior, won the 170-pound class for the Wildcats to move to 29-2. Laina Dettmann (30-6) was runner-up at 125 pounds.

Humboldt had six third place finishes. They include Letty Jenson (18-14) at 100 pounds, Gracey May (26-17) at 115, Emilie Schriber (21-17) at 120, Dayton Cleghorn (19-27) at 145, Mia Sorensen (19-13) at 155 and Addie Meyer (15-13) at 190.
