PATRICIA L. BROCK

Patricia L “Pat” Brock, 94, of Humboldt, passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2026 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital in Humboldt surrounded by her family.
Patricia Louise Brock was born May 18, 1931 in Sioux City, the daughter of Charles and Beatrice (Wolcott) Hamand. After living in Sioux Rapids she attended Morningside College where she met Basil “Base” Brock and the two were married on July 30, 1950. Bode was their hometown prior to moving to Humboldt in 1975. Pat was an accomplished seamstress and homemaker before working at Winds Bootery and Village Kobbler.
Pat was a member of Faith United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and loved playing the chimes and participating in the bell choir. Music was her language. She sang barber shop in the Melody Moms and Sweet Adelines. She loved singing in the Community Chorus for 29 years.

Humboldt boys 2nd in Bunn Relays

Humboldt's boys' track team had numerous top five finishes and placed runner-up in their own Charlie Bunn Relays on Friday, April 10.

The Wildcats finished with 126 points to finish behind first-place Algona at 149. Garner-Hayfield/Ventura was third with 114 in the eight-team field of schools.

Humboldt's first-place finishes came in the shuttle hurdle relay, the 4x400 relay, the distance medley relay and Carter Reed in the high jump.

Humboldt will run next in the Fort Dodge Dodger Relays on Monday, April 13.

Wildcat boys in golf victory at Pocahontas

Humboldt's varsity boys' golf team shot a blistering 152 to win their season opener at Pocahontas on Friday, April 10. Pocahontas Area was runner-up with a 175 and Manson-Nowthwest Webster was third with 179.

Dawson Sleiter shot a 34 and Cade Birdsell added a 38 to lead Humboldt. Andrew Nedved carded 39 and Ascher Gonder shot 41. Carson Oleson (42) and Cooper Theesfeld (44) round out the Humboldt scoring. Christian Amspoker fired a 39 to lead MNW. Bodee Madsen shot a 40 to lead Pocahontas Area.

Humboldt will be off until April 20 when they compete in a meet at Spencer.

Humboldt City Council sets budget

After a public hearing with no objectors, the Humboldt City Council reviewed the property tax levy for the 2026-27 fiscal year and set in motion the process for its approval at their next meeting.

The city’s proposed budget for the 2026-27 year for residential with an actual/assessed valuation of $100,000/$110,000 will be $784, up from the current year at $754.

For regular commercial property with an actual/assessed valuation of $300,000/$330,000, it will go from $3,278 to $3,661.

Taxable valuations for non-debt service will go down, from $210,618,010 to $209,265,208.

“In the budget we have put together, our asking amount is only going up $1,600. The levy is only going up roughly ten cents,” Humboldt City Administrator Cole Bockelmann said.

Vinsand's record-tying 5 goals power HHS girls past HDC

Kaleigh Vinsand tied a school record with five goals to lead Humboldt past HDC on April 7.

Kaleigh Vinsand scored five goals, tying a school record, to lead the Humboldt girls' soccer team past Hampton-Dumont-CAL, 5-2 in a North Central Conference matchup at Hampton on Tuesday night, April 7. Laina Dettmann made two saves at the net to aid the Wildcat victory. Humboldt improved to 2-0 on the season. Humboldt won their season opener on Monday night (April 6) at Webster City, winning by a 3-1 final count. Vinsand is the third player in school history to score five goals. Ava McIntire did it in 2024 and Jayden Smith scored five in a contest in the 2018 season.

Kaleigh Vinsand, Gracie Lyon and Ava Girres each scored a goal in the Wildcat victory. Vinsand and Sadie Hubbell each had an assist on the night. Wildcat goalkeeper Laina Dettmann made four saves at the net.

MARGARET L. BRODALE

Margaret L. Brodale, 79, of Bettendorf, IA passed away Friday. April 3, 2026, at University of Iowa Hospitals Iowa City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 9, 2026, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church Milan, IL. The family will greet friends from 12 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will follow at Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the church. Please share condolences with the family at www.rungemortuary.com.
Margaret was born on Dec. 26, 1946, to Tedmar and Corrine (Lomen) Brodale. She was raised in Bode, with her older sister Mary and younger brother Ted. She graduated from Twin River Community High School in 1965.
Margaret had been employed as a Medical Technologist at Palmer College for many years before retiring from Metro Lab in Moline, IL. She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church Milan, IL.

Wildcat boys’ golfers have lofty goals

Led by returning Class 3A state meet performer Cade Birdsell, the Humboldt High boys’ golf team has set lofty goals this spring.

The Wildcats, led by veteran head coach Scott Birdsell and assistant Susan Blanchard, have what they refer to as unfinished business. Last year the Wildcats finished fourth in the North Central Conference tournament, won their sectional and were fourth in the district meet.

Cade Birdsell (junior), Dawson Sleiter (sophomore), John Blanchard (sophomore) and Carson Oleson (junior) will be key returnees this season.

“Cade has been with us every year since he was a freshman. He made the state tournament last year individually. He had a real good year,” Scott Birdsell said. “Dawson Sleiter and Carson Oleson played a lot and lettered for us. John Blanchard is another sophomore who will contribute.”
