Kuemper sidelines Humboldt girls' soccer team, 7-0

Carroll Kuemper ended Humboldt's varsity girls' soccer season by downing the Wildcats, 7-0 in a Class 1A Region 5 semifinal round game in Carroll on June 2. Humboldt's season ends with an overall record of 11-4-3. Kuemper met Des Moines Christian in a regional final.

Lynx avenge earlier loss, down HHS girls, 9-5

The Webster City softball team avenged an earlier loss to Humboldt by turning back the Wildcats, 9-5 in Humboldt on June 15. The loss dropped Humboldt to 5-9 overall, 3-5 in the NCC.

Humboldt lost a 5-3 contest to Fort Dodge St. Edmond in the Van Meter tournament last Saturday, June 13. Humboldt's game with Van Meter was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Humboldt blasted Hampton-Dumont-CAL, 14-3 in four innings on Friday night, June 12, in Hampton.

Humboldt blanked Belmond-Klemme, 10-0 in Belmond on June 11. Humboldt hosted Clarion on June 10 and rolled to a 15-3 victory over Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.

Emmetsburg pulled out an 8-7 victory over Humboldt in non-conference softball in Humboldt on June 9.

Humboldt traveled to Iowa Falls on June 8 and lost 4-2 to the Cadets.

Cade Birdsell 11th in state golf

Humboldt High junior Cade Birdsell finished in a tie for 11th place after the second and final day of the Class 3A state golf tournament in Waterloo.

Birdsell finished with a six-over-par 150. He shot rounds of 74-76. Parker Rodgers of Nevada was the individual medalist with a five-under-par 139. Brady Oleson of Marion and Jaimie Miller of Spirit Lake both shot a 144 for runner-up honors. Carson Korver of MOC-Floyd Valley was net with 146.

Ballard Huxley won the team title with 610 strokes. MOC-FV had 612, North Polk 615, Atlantic 617, Knoxville 618 and Marion 622. The rest of the field saw Okoboji finish with 623, Des Moines Christian 628, Pella 629, Solon 632, Independence 634 and Spencer 641.

Birdsell competed at state individually a year ago and was a member of the Wildcat team that finished ninth in 2024.

Hulsey gives Memorial Day speech in Renwick

SGT Michael A. Hulsey gave the Memorial Day address during the program at Veterans Park in Renwick.

Hulsey started his military career shortly after completing school, in April of 2001, just months before the attack on the World Trade Center.

That act and the President of the United States and Congress declaring war against terror would shape Hulsey’s military career, his health, and his family’s daily life well into the future.

Hulsey was deployed three separate times. The first year- long deployment was for the Invasion of Iraq began March 19, 2003 (Iraq 2003 and 2004).

The second year-long deployment was to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006 and the third was to Afghanistan in 2009 for Operation Enduring Freedom.

Hulsey was medically retired after 11 years of service in 2012, following his multiple combat deployments across the Middle East.

Wildcat boys divide pair with Clear Lake

The Humboldt High baseball team moved to 8-1 overall, 5-1 in the North Central Conference after sweeping Hampton-Dumont-CAL in a home doubleheader on June 1. The Wildcats won by scores of 15-5 and 11-5.

Humboldt whipped Newell-Fonda 18-4 in non-conference action at Newell on May 28.

Humboldt divided their North Central Conference home doubleheader with Clear Lake on Tuesday, May 26, winning 2-1 in the first game and falling 6-3 in the second game.

In the opener, Valley Davis pitched eight strong innings to earn the win on the mound for the Wildcats. Jackson Flaherty scored in Chase Flaherty's hit in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Humboldt. In the second game, Clear Lake took advantage of 11 walks and four hit batsmen to come out on top.

Greek Pantheon Comes Alive at HMS Student Wax Museum

The 6th-grade literacy classes at Humboldt Middle School held a “Wax Museum” on May 21, showcasing what they have learned during their unit on Ancient Greece.

The students each selected a god, goddess, or creature from Greek mythology and spent a few class periods researching them, memorizing what they had learned and creating posters and costumes to present during the Wax Museum. The process took a little over a month to complete.

One of the teachers whose class participated was English and Language Arts teacher Theo Vardaxis, whose family hails from Greece.

He said, “I think it’s gone better than last year, honestly. Having one year under our belts helps make doing this an even better experience.”

LEVI E. R. JACOBI

Levi Ethan Robert Jacobi, the infant son of Jacob and Ashley (Inman) Jacobi was stillborn on Saturday, May 16, 2026 at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge.
A child perfect and loved, Levi is survived by his parents Jacob and Ashley, his siblings; Heero (11), Hayate (9), Romen (7) and Catniss (5), his grandparents David (Shelly) Jacobi of Moorland, grandfather Douglas Inman of Des Moines and his grandmother Deborah Gearhart of Clinton and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
A Memorial Gathering was held on Saturday, May 23 at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral & Cremation Service in Humboldt. www.masonlindhart.com

LEO P. STAHL

Leo Paul Stahl, 93, of Humboldt, passed away on Friday March 6, 2026 at New Homestead in Guthrie Center.
Leo was born on January 27, 1933 in Lu Verne, the son of Paul and Marie (Heinen) Stahl. He married Patricia Ann Hanrahan on Jan. 26, 1957 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Humboldt. Leo was employed by Gunder Manufacturing in Dakota City and was employed there for 50 years.
Leo liked to play pool, play cards, golfing and fishing. He always enjoyed being with family, especially the grandchildren.
Leo is survived by his children, Lisa (Daryl) Muhlbauer, Bob (Kelly) Stahl and Nick (Kathy) Stahl, his grandchildren, Chad, Cole, Courtney, Sam, Rachel, Chase, Andie, Betsy and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mildred Stahl, wife Patricia (Hanrahan) Stahl, his brother James Stahl and sister Mary Jane DeMarre.
