Sister’s Homestyle Entrees receives Small Business Award

Sister’s Homestyle Entrees of Humboldt received the Small Business of the Week Award from U.S. Senator Joni Ernst last week.

Ernst, who is Chair of the Senate Small Business Committee, has made it a point to present the award to businesses in all 99 counties of Iowa and enter them into the Congressional Record.

In her Humboldt stop on May 8, Ernst presented the award to company owner Mary Catherine Ferry in a gathering of company employees and well-wishers.

“The fact that they do so much for this community but for other communities and those that are not able to get out to the grocery stores or maybe are elderly and can’t prepare their own meals, it just does so much good,” Ernst said. “She has so many wonderful employees here as part of the team. That’s why I’m proud to present her the Small Business of the Week Award to Sister’s Homestyle Entrees of Humboldt.”

DIANE L. DESMIDT

Diane L. DeSmidt, 80, of Humboldt, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2026 at the Marian Home in Fort Dodge.
Born in Chicago on March 1, 1946 to Jessie and Keith “Ivan” DeSmidt. Diane was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and “Ivan” DeSmidt, and brother James “Jim” DeSmidt. Diane is survived by her sister-in-law Janet DeSmidt, nephew Daniel DeSmidt, wife Kristi, grand-niece Morgan Geddes, husband David, great-grand-nieces, Nora and Grace Geddes, grand-nephew Tyler DeSmidt, nephew Craig DeSmidt, wife Emily, niece Kimberly DeSmidt and many extended cousins.
From a young age Diane had a strong connection with God - from Sunday School, to singing in the church choir, to serving on a district youth board when she was in high school.

SHARON A. SAVERY

Sharon Ann (Bowe) Savery, 78, of Rolfe, passed away on May 3, 2026, at her home on the family farm north of Rolfe.
Sharon was born on June 4, 1947, in Chippewa Falls, WI. She graduated from Arrowhead High School in Pewaukee in 1966.
During her senior year, while working at a local bowling alley, Sharon met Don Savery. She would later say she knew he was the one the moment they locked eyes and she saw his piercing baby blues. The two were married on April 8, 1967, in Hartland, WI, beginning a life together that spanned nearly six decades.
Early in their marriage, Sharon and Don lived in Texas City, TX, before returning to Wisconsin and eventually settling in Rolfe. They made their home on Don’s childhood farm, where they lived for the rest of their lives.

Wildcat girls 4th in NCC track meet

Humboldt won two events and placed fourth in the girls' North Central Conference track and field championship held in Webster City on May 7.

The Wildcats, who finished with 103 points, finished behind Algona (174), Clear Lake (165) and Webster City (105). Charles City was next with 42 points in the nine-team field of schools.

Avery Fisher won the 3,000-meters in 11:02.03. The 1,600-meter medley relay took first in 1:13.87. It was comprised of Payton Elman, Gracey May, Kate Sievers and Brynn Malo. Brynn Malo was runner-up in the 800-meters in 2:28.46.

Humboldt was also third in the 4x400 relay, the 4x800 relay and the shuttle hurdle relay.

Humboldt will now prepare for the Class 3A state qualifying meet in Clear Lake on Thursday, May 14. The top two place winners in each event, along with the next eight-best performances state-wide, advance to the state meet in Des Moines May 21-23. Wildcats 5th in NCC boys' track meet

Humboldt finished fifth with 78 points as a team in the North Central Conference meet at Algona on May 7.

Clear Lake won the team crown with 177 points. Algona was second with 121 and Iowa Falls-Alden third at 113. Webster City was fourth with 82. Hampton-Dumont-CAL was sixth with 59. Fort Dodge St. Edmond (40), Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (38) and Charles City (28) round out the team scoring.

Humboldt's 1,600-meter medley relay of Cash McIntire, Jackson Flaherty, Valley Davis and Chase Flaherty finished first in 3:40.73.

McIntire was fourth in the long jump at 19-4. Jack Guy was fourth in the shot put at 52-6.25. Humboldt's 800-meter medley relay took fourth in 1:34.18. The Wildcat 4x200 relay was also fourth in 1:34.12.

Humboldt will now prepare for the state qualifying meet at Clear Lake on May 14. Other schools on hand will include Algona, Clear Lake, Charles City, Independence, Iowa Falls-Alden and Hampton-Dumont-CAL.

Stattelman receives Quilt of Valor from Lyons

Holly Lyons (left) chose to use material that was indicative of the military such as camouflage in different colors and fabric with military words on it to make the “Quilt of Valor” for Jeremy Stattelman rather than the traditional red, white and blue. She awarded him the quilt at his place of employment, Cornbelt Power Cooperative.

Being far from loved ones on your own can be mentally taxing enough, but add in living in less than ideal conditions, the danger of things exploding around you or getting shot and the mental fatigue of a service member grows exponentially.

One proven way to help with the mental stress of deployment is to be able to maintain a connection with home. While technology has definitely helped to keep people connected who are far apart, there is still something very special about getting a package from home to lift a person’s spirits.

Jeremy Stattelman was lucky to have a fellow Humboldt resident who dedicated herself to sending him packages from “home” every week when he deployed not once, but twice.

SHERMAN E. SILBUAGH

Sherman Eugene Silbuagh was born on Nov. 23, 1930 to Elmer and Jessie (Sayre) Silbaugh in Green County near Scranton, and passed away into eternal peace Friday, May 1, 2026 at Shalom Park Nursing Home in Colorado with his family at the age of 95 years.
Sherman was the youngest of 10 children. His father died when Sherman was 6. The family moved to Linden in Dallas County where he and his brother Norman farmed. He graduated in 1947 from Linden High School. He played basketball and was the school bus driver for their team. When his brother Norman died in 1947 they sold the farm and he and his mother moved to Humboldt.

GARY W. SEWARD

Gary W. Seward, 72, of Plymouth, MN, passed away on May 5, 2024. Gary was born in Fort Dodge, on Dec. 15, 1952. He is survived by his wife, Jayne Cook Seward, brother David of Sergant Bluffs, brother-in-law Bruce Cook, Yucca Valley, CA, along with many nieces and nephews.
Gary served in the Army from 1971-1974. He had a ready smile, laughing blue eyes and contagious laughter. He was everybody’s friend.
He chose to donate his body to the University of Minnesota for research. Gary said he wanted to help find a cure for cancer. He will be missed by all who knew him.
