Joseph P. “Joe” Mahan, 78, of Humboldt, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2026 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital in Humboldt with his daughter at his side.

Wildcat boys win NCC dual golf title, 4th in tournament

Humboldt won the North Central Conference boys' golf dual title by turning back Hampton-Dumont-CAL (162-200) in a meet in Hampton on May 5. Humboldt, 7-0 in the NCC, was led by Dawson Sleiter, Carson Oleson and Cade Birdsell each with a 40 to lead all golfers. Cooper Theesfeld shot a 42.

Humboldt finished fourth in the NCC tournament held at Legacy Golf Course in Mason City on May 7. The Wildcats totaled 317 strokes. Clear Lake won with 311. Webster City has 313 and Algona was third with 314. Iowa Falls-Alden was fifth at 333.

Humboldt's Dawson Sleiter (75) and Cade Birdsell (77) placed third and fifth, respectively, to earn all-conference honors with top eight finishes. Carson Oleson was 13th with an 81. Cooper Theesfeld was 19th with an 84, Ascher Gonder 22nd with an 86 and Andrew Nedved 35th with 92.

Gavin Roske of Clear Lake was medalist with a 70. Coyce Bertran of Webster City was runner-up with a 74. Algona's Alex Brooks shot a 76 for fourth.

Wildcat girls, boys place 3rd in Storm Lake track Invitational

The Humboldt girls and boys' track teams both placed third in the Storm Lake Invitational on April 30.

Humboldt's girls secured four top performances. Wildcat senior Brynn Malo ran a season’s best 2:28.73 to win the 800-meters. Avery Fisher ran a season’s best 11:11.97 to take second in the 3,000-meters. The shuttle hurdle relay of Kate Sievers, Claire Dieleman, Alivia Goodell and Fiona Tinken ran a season’s best 1:14.88 to win the event. Humboldt also ran a season’s best 10:27.26 to finish second in the 4x800 relay. The 4x400 relay also had a season’s best time of 4:28.48.

The Wildcats had season’s best performances in several other events, both varsity and JV, as they near the final few weeks of the season.

“The girls have really been performing well the last fe3w meets. We continue to improve in the skill areas such as block starts, baton exchanges and race strategy,” Humboldt head coach Spencer Ross said.

Lynx edge Wildcat boys, 3-2

Nico Christensen and Karson Rubel teamed up for two second-half goals but it was enough for the Humboldt boys' soccer team as they fell 3-2 at Webster City on April 30 in North Central Conference action.

The loss dropped Humboldt's record to 2-3-2 overall while the host Lynx improved to 5-1-2.

Both scores were set up when Rubel took two free kicks that sailed 40 years across the field and were deflected into the opposing goal on header moves by Christensen.

Humboldt returns to action on Monday, May 4, when they host Hampton-Dumont-CAL. The Wildcats also host Storm Lake on May 5 and Wright County on May 7.
