WSR sidelines Humboldt baseball team, 8-2

No. 9 ranked Waverly-Shell Rock scored five runs in the fifth inning and went on to defeat the Humboldt baseball team, 8-2 in a Class 3A substate semifinal round game in Waverly on Monday night, July 13. WSR advanced into a substate final at North Polk on July 15 against North Polk. North Polk beat Gilbert, 4-0 in the other semifinal round game. Humboldt finishes its season at 21-9 overall.

The Humboldt softball team ended their season on Saturday night (July 11) in a 10-0 loss at fifth-ranked Prairie City Monroe in a regional semifinal game. See full story in the Independent this week.

Humboldt girls win regional softball opener, 9-1
The Humboldt softball team overcame a slow start and went on to beat Estherville-Lincoln Central, 9-1 in four innings in a Class 3A Region 6 opening round tournament game in Humboldt on Thursday night, July 9.

The triumph advanced the Wildcats into a regional semifinal at Prairie City Monroe on Saturday night, July 11 against No. 5 ranked PCM. PCM opened with a 9-0 victory over Southeast Valley. The other half of 3A-6 had Algona winning 19-1 over Okoboji and Spirit Lake topping Sheldon 5-3. Spirit Lake will face Algona on Saturday night in Algona. The regional final will be played on July 14 against the highest ranked remaining school.

Council hears complaints on motorized bikes in downtown Humboldt

Public complaints on motorized bikes and scooters came to a head at the Humboldt City Council meeting on Monday night, July 6.

“I’ve received a number of complaints of near-misses on streets and sidewalks downtown, kids riding double on them and not following rules and regulations,” Humboldt Mayor Walter Jensen said.

“It’s on the agenda tonight to see if we need to take action or at least see what we can do about it,” Jensen said.

“I’ve gotten phone calls from people who have seen kids doing this but, they have to call the police department so they can see,” councilman John Sleiter said.

“I’ve talked to Jacob (Miller, police chief), and they are watching. They are on sidewalks that they aren’t supposed to be on and they are on Sumner Avenue. It’s a parent thing. The parents should be teaching these kids what they can and can’t do,” Sleiter said.

Chief Miller was on hand to field questions and share his input.

AILEEN P. F. WELD

The world lost a bright star on Monday, July 15, 2024 when Aileen Patricia Feany Weld, an inspiration to countless others, passed away at age 91. Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, Aug. 17, 2026, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Humboldt. Inurnment will take place at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Humboldt. Services have been entrusted to Lentz Funeral Home of Humboldt. Online condolences may be left at www.lentzfuneralhome.com.
Those who were fortunate enough to have known Aileen (aka “Pat” to many friends) will recall her foremost wearing an infectious smile and a fun-loving twinkle in her eye that inspired them to smile and laugh with her. While she always looked for the laugh, Aileen was also a tough, hardy soul who stoically weathered life’s struggles and didn’t back down from challenge. Her childlike enjoyment of life and her ready laughter saw her through many trying times.

JEANENE M. HEINZ

Jeanene Maxine Heinz, 82, of Humboldt, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2026 in Des Moines.
Jeanene was born Nov. 12, 1943 in Hastings, NE to Homer and Frances (Findley) Carlson. She grew up on a farm near Sutton, NE and graduated from Sutton High School. It was during high school that she met her future husband, Jim Heinz. Following graduation, she attended Mary Lanning School of Nursing in Hastings, NE where she obtained her nursing degree. Jim & Jeanene were married on Aug. 16, 1964. Following Jim’s graduation from Physical Therapy school at the University of Iowa, the couple moved to Fort Dodge, then to Humboldt in 1974. Jeanene had a flair for decorating and loved antiques. She owned and operated the Country House in Humboldt for a number of years in the late 80s and early 90s. In retirement she assisted at King’s Kids Preschool and was known as “Granny Heinz”. She took great joy in helping with this ministry.

CHARLES C. STREIT

Charles “Chuck” Streit, 72 of Livermore, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2026, at his home. A memorial Service was held Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at Oak Hill Church in Humboldt. Charles Cletus Streit, the son of Cletus Peter and Anna Marie (Berte) Streit, was born on Aug. 24, 1953 in Algona. Chuck graduated with the class of 1971. He enlisted with the United States Air Force in September of 1971 and was honorably discharged in July of 1975. On Oct. 21, 1973, Chuck was united in marriage to Pansy Duncan in Rantoul, IL. After his honorable discharge, Chuck enrolled at Iowa Central Community College. He worked for Sande Construction as a Superintendent until his retirement in 2018.
