Conservation is a dam site closer to a sale

The Humboldt County Conservation Board moved a few steps closer to selling the Reasoner Dam to the River Development Group (RDG) during their regular meeting on Wednesday, July 15.

Lee led the discussion with the fact that the insurance, which had been presented by the RDG at the last meeting, was determined to be sufficient to fulfill the requirements set out in original purchase agreement.

Now that insurance has been put in place, the next step is to work with the city on an easement to allow the RDG to get to the dam.

Working with ISG, they have survey data because of the bridge and trail project, at least for the west side of the dam. " They might also have stuff on the east side, too so that it would make it as cheap as it can be,” Lee said.

The cost will still be about $3,000 to provide the survey information and put the easement together.

With the roads of this life behind him, he began his eternal journey on the streets of gold, where he was welcomed into the arms of his Savior and joyfully reunited with his oldest son, Chad David Habben.
Al was born on Dec. 13, 1948, to Art and Donna Habben. From an early age, he developed a love for the open road, and for nearly his entire working life he made his living as a truck driver. Behind the wheel, he wasn’t just hauling freight—he was providing for his family, building a life through hard work, dedication and countless miles. The road became a part of who he was, but home was always where his heart remained.

RANDY C. GREENE SR.

Randy C. Greene Sr., 73 of Bode, passed away on Tuesday, at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital in Humboldt.
Randy was born Feb. 5, 1953 in Fort Dodge, the son of Richard and Colleen (Patton) Greene. He grew up in Humboldt and worked for the local telephone companies; Midwestern Bell, Northwestern Bell and Qwest Communications. He was united in marriage to Kalene Vorland in 1978. Together they had three children, later divorced, but remained close friends. Randy loved the outdoors and planted many trees. He was a huge fan of the New York Yankees, Corvettes and road trips. He loved teaching his grandchildren how to throw a knuckle-ball, shoot a basketball as well as the proper living room wrestling techniques, namely “the steamroller.” In retirement he worked for many different delivery services as well as rail crew transportation.

Humboldt lands 5 on All-North Central Conference softball

The Humboldt High softball team placed five on the coaches' post-season North Central All-Conference team. Wildcat head coach Sheridan Zeka made the announcement on July 16.

Humboldt's first-team selections include senior shortstop Gracie Lyon and senior centerfielder Claire Dieleman.

Second-team picks include junior pitcher Adalee Nolting and sophomore third baseman Sadie Hubbell. Junior second baseman Hayden Graaf was chosen to the third-team.

The remainder of the all-conference team will be released after the completion of the state tournament, to be held July 20-24 in Fort Dodge.

Wildcats place 6 on North Central All-Conference baseball

The Humboldt High baseball team had six players selected North Central All-Conference for the 2026 season.

Wildcats chosen to the first-team unit include senior catcher Jackson Flaherty, junior infielder Avyon Sutterfield and senior outfielder Valley Davis.

Second-team selections include senior outfielder Chase Flaherty and junior Chase Hansen at utility/designated hitter.

Sophomore Dane Clark was selected to the third-team unit.

Humboldt finished the season at 21-9 overall and were 10-4 and third in the league standings.

Bank Iowa celebrates 50 years

From left, CEO of Bank Iowa, Jim Plagge and Humboldt employees Lynn Kellner, Emily Knight, Tara Cran, Sheri Moritz, Kari Evans, Cindy Diehl and Trisha Menke, Retail Banking Director/Bank Security Officer, were on hand to help Moritz celebrate her 31 years with Bank Iowa. Moritz’s last day was Friday, March 13.

Fifty years ago in 1976, Donald Duncan, Robert Duncan and Harry Barr purchased their first bank, Citizens State Bank, later to become Bank Iowa, in their hometown of Clarinda.

From that humble beginning more branches were added to the Bank Iowa family culminating in 23 locations throughout the state.

Now, 50 years later, Bank Iowa is celebrating the milestone with a birthday party complete with ice cream and prizes. The public is encouraged to stop by the downtown location on Thursday, July 16 from 12 to 3 p.m. to join in the celebration.
