Compromised offered on Bradgate road

The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors and the city of Bradgate may have reached a temporary solution to road shoulder problems on County Road C-26 through the city. Supervisor Jerry Haverly made a motion at the board's meeting on Monday to add gravel edging to increase the shoulder height on C-26, within the community of Bradgate. “We have helped other towns out in situations like this. I would move to have the funds come from the county’s portion of Local Option Sales Tax dollars,” Haverly said. The supervisors voted unanimously for the motion. Supervisor Carl Mattes was not in attendance. The decision came after more discussion on the matter. Last week, Bradgate Mayor Sandy Edler showed the board pictures of the deteriorating condition of the roadway shoulders in her community. The pictures showed where the crushed rock and gravel leading up to the pavement were sometimes three to four inches below the top of the road.

This week’s cook is a relative newcomer to the Humboldt area. Amanda Danzl, the daughter of Jim and Tami Danzl, is a native of Manhattan, IL. She moved to Humboldt in October of 2012 and is a registered dietician at Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. A graduate of Vitebo University, La Crosse, WI, Amanda enjoys knitting, biking, spending time outside, and reading as well as cooking. She has no preferred menus, but enjoys cooking and eating a variety of foods.Easy Beef and Bean Burritosfrom Leanne Ely1/3 pound extra lean ground beef1/3 cup quick oats1/2 tablespoon chili powder1/2 teaspoon cumin10 ounce package chopped frozen spinach- defrosted and drained2/3 cup chunky salsa16 ounce can black beans, drainedSalt and pepper to taste1/3 cup Colby cheese, shredded2/3 cup cilantro, chopped(4) 12 inch tortillas Combine the raw ground beef and oats. In a medium skillet, brown the beef and oat mixture over medium heat for 8-10 minutes or until no longer pink; stirring occasionally.

Wildcat girls win golf triangular

Led by Caitlin Kohlhaas with a 45, the Humboldt High girls' golf team defeated Hampton-Dumont and Algona Tuesday night in conference golf action at Hampton. The Wildcats totaled 202 shots. Algona was next at 213 and Hampton third at 232. Savannah Schnetzer shot a 50 for Humboldt while Ashley Samuelson shot a 53, Emily Case a 54. The Wildcat JV team also won.Humboldt hosts Emmetsburg on Monday, April 22.See complete story in the Humboldt Independent Newspaper.

Humboldt School Board approves 4 percent increase

During their regular monthly meeting Monday night (April 15), the Humboldt School Board approved a fiscal year 2013-14 salary package with the Humboldt Education Association, which includes a four percent overall increase. The increase includes a $777 increase to the generator base salary, along with a new, updated supplementary schedule.

Humboldt native safe at Boston Marathon

A Humboldt native competed in his first Boston Marathon on Monday, but finished about 50 minutes ahead of the explosions that rocked the finish line of the race, killing three and wounding more than 170 people. Trent Biederman, 34, Aurora, IL, is the son of Dave and Mary Biederman of Humboldt. Trent and his wife, Megan, were safe and sound and about a mile away from the blast, back at their motel, at the time the explosion occurred, about 1:50 p.m. Iowa time Monday. “He finished about 50 minutes ahead of that, but we didn’t know that and were very scared and concerned for a time Monday afternoon,” Mary Biederman said. “The cell service had been shut down and we couldn’t get in touch with him. He texted our daughter and told her he was OK, but we were on pins and needles for about a half an hour or 40 minutes, not knowing,” Mary said. Trent was able to call his parents later in the afternoon.
