Humboldt Council agrees to engineering services for bridge

The Humboldt City Council on Monday unanimously agreed to a resolution approving a supplement to the professional services agreement with WHKS of Mason City for final design engineering services for the Sumner Avenue Bridge. The work will include a final design of the new Sumner Avenue Bridge and the engineer’s probable cost for construction, as well as the final project review, construction plans and specification. It is assumed that the bridge will consist of five continuous concrete slabs totaling two slabs of 45 feet and three slabs of 58 feet, for a total bridge length of 264 feet. The roadway will be 30-feet, six-inches, and will include two 12-feet traffic lanes with three-feet shoulder areas and a five-foot wide sidewalk with a separation railing on the north side of the bridge. Abutments will be integral or semi-integral on steel H piles, driven into rock.

HHS boys shoot 159 to win home golf triangular

Led by Landon Schnetzer and Christian Birdsell with a pair of 39s, the Humboldt varsity boys' golf team opened conference play by turning back Hampton-Dumont and Algona Tuesday night (April 16) at Humboldt Country Club. The Wildcats shot a 159 total. H-D finished with 173 strokes and Algona had 181. Humboldt also got a 40 from Jaxon Heinz and a 41 from Brendan Schnell.The Wildcat JV boys also won their meet, shooting a 177 to lead runner-up H-D with 198. Algona had 219.The Wildcats are scheduled to play at Emmetsburg on April 18 and travel to Iowa Falls on April 23 to face IFA and Webster City.See the Humboldt Independent Newspaper for complete story and action photos.

HHS girls win 7 events, finish 2nd at Pocahontas

Humboldt's varsity girls' track team won seven events and placed second to Algona in the large-school field of teams in the Pocahontas Area Relays held Tuesday (April 16) in Pocahontas.The Wildcats' Sam Larson won both the 1,500 and 3,000 meters races while Kaitlyn Jensen won the 100-meter hurdles and Brittney Nilles won the 400-meter hurdles. Erica Lane won the discus title. The Wildcat 4x800 relay claimed first place. The foursome of Nilles, Kenzie Ross, April Jones and Maddie Kampen comprised the relay. The distance medley relay of Emily Hughes, Anna Tecklenburg, Hannah Friesth and Larson also took first-place.See complete story and photos in the Humboldt Independent Newspaper.

Wildcat soccer team falls to Storm Lake, 5-4

Humboldt's varsity soccer team went toe-to-toe with ranked Storm Lake for over 80 minutes and beyond, but ended up on the short end of a 5-4 shootout in Humboldt Tuesday night (April 16). The loss dropped the Wildcats' season record to 1-2.The two teams went scoreless after 80 minutes of play and then were scoreless after two periods before a spot kick shootout took place to determine the winner. Storm Lake made all five of their kicks while Humboldt had four to determine the outcome. Scoring for Humboldt was Matt Pogge, Nick Heider, Craig Fishel and Joe Hadar.Humboldt plays host to Garner-Hayfield/Ventura on Thursday, April 18 at 5 p.m.See the Independent for complete story and photos.

COOK OF THE WEEK - JAMIE SHIFLETT

An older sister was looking out for this week’s cook in 1988. That’s the year that she introduced her younger sister, Jamie, to her future husband, David Shiflett. Jamie, the daughter of Randy and Penny Palmer, grew up in the Renwick area, attended Boone Valley School in Renwick and graduated from Humboldt High School. Jamie earned her AA degree from Iowa Central Community College and currently works as a medical laboratory technician. Her husband, David, is the son of Gerald and Paulette Shiflett. He attended St. Mary’s School in Humboldt, graduated from Humboldt High School and is currently employed as the manager at Hog Slat in Humboldt. Jamie and David were married on March 18, 1989, and are the parents of three children: Ethan, Devin, and Dylan. Ethan, 20, attends Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. Devin, 18, is a senior and Dylan, 15, is a freshman at Humboldt High School. The Shifletts attend St.

Wildcat soccer teams pummels Mason City, 7-2

MASON CITY – Matt and Will Pogge combined for a hat trick, Nick Heider scored two goals and the Humboldt HIgh boys' soccer team won their first game of the season by pounding Mason City, 7-2 Monday night (April 15) at Mason City.Humboldt, now 1-1 on the season, got two goals from Matt Pogge and one each from Craig Fishel and Michael Orness. The Wildcat junior varsity tied the Mohawks, 1-1 with Brett Fishel scoring the lone Wildcat goal.Humboldt will play host to rated Storm Lake today (April 16) at 5 p.m. HHS hosts Garner-Hayfield/Ventura on Thursday, April 18.See the Independent for complete story and action photos.
