September is National Honey Month. Honey dates back as far as 2100 B.C. where it was mentioned in the sacred writings of India and Egypt, Sumerian and Babylonian cuneiform writings and the Hittite code. The first and most widespread sweetener used by man, the name comes from the English word hunig. It is said that Cupid’s arrows were dipped in honey before they were aimed at unsuspecting lovers. Honey was prized and often used as currency, tribute or offering. In the 11th century, German peasants paid their feudal lords in beeswax and honey. It is not known if honey is native to the Americas, but it has been documented that Spaniards found the natives of Central America and Mexico had set up beekeeping operations and were using honey in 1600 A.D. On Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 1:53 p.m., a masked person carrying a semi-automatic handgun entered the Bank Iowa Gilmore City office on SE C Avenue and demanded money. According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) the suspect then fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect is described by law enforcement as possibly being a female, about 5-foot, six-inches tall with dark hair. At the time of the robbery the suspect was reportedly wearing a red New York Yankees baseball cap with a flat bill, a red handkerchief bandana covering the face and a red, long-sleeved t-shirt, with a black baggy shirt over the t-shirt. The suspect had baggy worn blue jeans and dark tennis shoes with while soles. The HCSO was able to gather information on the suspect’s description from eyewitness accounts and from surveillance equipment inside the bank. The possible suspect vehicle is described as a teal or green-colored Chrysler Town and Country mini-van.
