Supervisors get serious about security

Humboldt County is getting serious about courthouse security. During its regular weekly meeting on Monday, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors heard about security directives that will be going into effect. Some of the measures are already being adhered to, others will provide more security for courthouse employees and members of the public doing business at the county offices in Dakota City. Humboldt County Auditor and board secretary Peggy Rice reported on attending a recent Iowa State Association of Counties meeting about security issues and ways to make improvements. Beginning this week, all doors to the courthouse will be locked until 7:45 a.m. and will be re-locked at 4:45 p.m. Only the main entrance door and the handicapped entrance door will be unlocked during business hours. To read about this and other matters discussed at the meeting, pick up a copy of this week's Humboldt Independent.

180,000 meals packaged by Humboldt community

“Fantastic, Marvelous, Super!” Those were a few of the adjectives being used to describe the community effort to package more than 180,000 meals for the hungry last Friday and Saturday at the Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Humboldt Middle School and St. Mary’s packaged meals on Friday and adult and children volunteers joined in the fun on Saturday, with a total of between 900-1,000 volunteers. The Meals from the Heartland meal packaging is in its fifth year and grows every year. This year’s goal was 160,000 meals. "Humboldt continually raises the bar every year, packaging more and more meals than ever before, making it the largest community Meals from the Heartland event outside of the Des Moines metro area," Meals from the Heartland Director and Humboldt native David Bradley. To read more about the effort and see more photos, look in the March 26 and April 2 editions of The Humboldt Independent.

COOK OF THE WEEK - JULIE CLARK

After reading about the Hy-Vee dietitian in the paper, I wanted to meet her and figured she would be a good candidate for our Cook of the Week. Julie Clark is highly qualified; maybe more than qualified for her job at Hy-Vee, as she has her Master’s Degree in clinical nutrition, is a Registered Dietitian, a Licensed Dietitian and a Certified Diabetes Educator. She already had a degree in journalism before she got her dietetics degree. Together these work really well in public relations for Hy-Vee. She is available for consultations for diabetic or other dietetic needs. Before she ever came to work for Hy-Vee there have been groceries in her background. Her father-in-law purchased the grocery store in Rockwell City from Julie’s grandparents in 1946, before Julie and Clive were ever born.
