Next Generation Farmer classes at ISU Extension

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Census of Agriculture, the average age of the Iowa farmer is 57.1 years. There are four times as many Iowa farmers over the age of 65 as there are under the age of 35.
That means there is going to have to be a lot of farm succession and farm future planning going on during the next decade.
Toward that end, Dorothy Goodell with Humboldt County Iowa State Extension and Outreach, has worked with industry partners in developing a series of Next Generation Farmer meetings. There will be six meetings on Tuesday evenings, starting Nov. 7, and continuing through March 12.
The Registration is $55 for all six sessions (or as many as the person wants to attend,) and includes lunch and incentives for attending each of the programs. All programs will be held in the Extension meeting room at Humboldt County Extension, 727 Sumner Ave. Payment can be made in cash or check the night of the meeting.

Council approves four-year contract with city administrator

Humboldt City Administrator Cole Bockelmann has received a four-year contract from the Humboldt City Council. Independent file photo.

Following a 27-minute closed session at its Oct. 16 meeting, the Humboldt City Council voted to go back into open session. The reason for the closed session was the annual performance review for Humboldt City Administrator Cole Bockelmann. Following the closed session, 1st Ward Council member Matt Dominick moved to approve a four-year employment contract with Bockelmann, commencing on Oct. 16, 2023 and effective until Oct. 16, 2027.
The only other change to the contract is that the Humboldt City Council agrees to provide $3,000 per year to a retirement account of Bockelmann’s choosing. The city and Bockelmann already contribute to the Iowa Public Retirement System via payroll deduction, 9.44 percent from the city and 6.29 percent from the city administrator.
