Humboldt advances 5 to state wrestling!

Humboldt’s varsity boys wrestling team advanced 5 into next week’s Class 2A state tournament in Des Moines after competing in a district meet at Story City on Saturday, Feb. 10.

Humboldt’s qualifiers include Owen Mayall at 120 pounds, Tyce Clarken at 126, Brady Beers at 138, Jaxson Kirchhoff at 144 and Broedy Hendricks at 165.

Humboldt also claimed the team title on the day.

The state tournament will be held Feb. 14-17 inside Wells Fargo Arena. Class 2A action begins at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14.

Humboldt's opening round matches are listed below:
120–Owen Mayall (31-10, seeded #21) vs. Kaydin Jones, sophomore, (37-5, #12), LaPorte City.

126–Tyce Clarken (40-5, #9), vs. Beckett Hagen (14,15, #24), junior, Carroll.

138–Brady Beers (28-18, #18), vs. Deken Sorensen (44-4, #15), senior, Davis County.

144–Jaxson Kirchhoff (37-12, #14), vs. Briten Maxwell (27-15, #19), senior, Glenwood.

HCMH looks at possible MH expansion

Humboldt County Memorial Hospital CEO Michelle Sleiter said the hospital's new Mental Health & Wellness Center clinic has already reached capacity for providers. The waiting list of patients totals 100.

Less than 10 months after opening a Mental Health & Wellness Center, Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) is already on the cusp of determining if an expansion is necessary.
That was the word from HCMH Chief Executive Officer Michelle Sleiter at the Board of Trustees meeting on Jan. 23.
“When I came to you about two years ago asking for $2 million for a mental health and wellness center it was on a hope strategy that if we build it, they will come. Now, less than one year into operations, we are out of space,” Sleiter said.
“We hit the mark faster than I ever dreamed possible. Beginning next month or the month after we need to strategically discuss where do we take mental health. How big do we want to be? Or are we who we are and are doing what we can do in the community,” Sleiter told the seven-member board.

McDaniel's heart scare allows comeback

Daylin McDaniel’s senior year has been anything but normal over the last six months.
Competing in Humboldt’s regional wrestling dual at Huxley on Jan. 30 was a step back to normalcy for him and his parents, Justin and Bre McDaniel.
After undergoing a barrage of tests, meeting with doctors, wearing heart monitors and missing out on most of his cross country and wrestling seasons, McDaniel returned to the mat and helped his Wildcats battle Ballard Huxley. The match ended up with Humboldt winning by criteria, 38-37, to advance to the state tournament last weekend, where Humboldt placed fifth.
“It felt good to get back on the mat. I’m happy I was able to contribute to the team," Daylin McDaniel said. Read about his challenges and comeback in this week's Humboldt Independent sports section.

Local food drives planned

Joel Rasmussen, Humboldt County Farm Bureau president, recently presented a $1,000 donation to the Humboldt Food Pantry. The donation was accepted by staff member Alisa Schlief. Farm Bureau recognizes that many Iowans experience difficulties including the most basic need of food security. As Iowa farmers, who raise livestock and grow crops, Farm Bureau leaders know the importance of providing safe, healthy food for everyone and care about those in need. In a collective effort to combat food insecurity in our community, residents of Humboldt County are invited to join in a special food drive Saturday, Feb. 10, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Humboldt Fareway Grocery Store.
The food drive will be held to benefit the Humboldt County Food Pantry. It will be staffed by the Humboldt County Democrats.
According to Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks, 9.5 percent of all Humboldt County residents were food insecure in 2021, the most recent year for which they have data.
The rate of food insecurity for Humboldt County’s children was 11.5 percent.

Gilbert topped the Humboldt boys’ basketball team, 82-76 Tuesday night (Feb. 14) in Humboldt in non-conference action. Hatcher and Carlson led the Wildcats with 26 and 22 points, respectively. Humboldt is now 14-6.

Wildcat boys outlast Iowa Falls-Alden, 89-67
Humboldt's varsity boys' basketball team finished the North Central Conference portion of their schedule Friday night (Feb. 9) by outlasting Iowa Falls-Alden, 89-67 at Iowa Falls. Elliot Carlson scored 23 points, Evan Hatcher made 22 and Coen Matson added 20 to pace Humboldt. Humboldt moved to 14-5 overall, 10-4 in conference play. IFA dipped to 5-16 overall.
